Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

What did you do on Saturday!

Blog Posted:8/28/2016 11:15:00 AM

First I just wanted to let everyone know why I am ignoring them. My baby sister ten years younger than me came out Friday to visit me. Saturday we spent driving to Boise, Idaho, to a small town right above Boise where my favorite nephew Samuel Clemens (he is named for his ancestor, the famous writer!) lives. Sammy performs in local theater and we watched him perform one of the major roles in the play Oklahoma. Wow, he is so good! I rode up to see him in my sister's car with her other son and my grandson Hyrum. My daughter was in another car with her two daughters.

We will be going back soon and I just came to post a poem, so I wanted to let everyone know this is the reason I have not returned comments. It is important to me to keep up with as many poets as I can and I don't want anyone to think I am ignoring them on purpose. Also I am not good with laptops that do not use a mouse!

So one last thing. Just to liven up my blog, tell me what you did yesterday. I love Saturdays because we can do the things we really love (if work is not our top love!) To be with my family has been so marvelous, just talking in the car for over six hours with my sister. Something to treasure. Did you have an ordinary Saturday, or did you fill it with fun?

It is so nice to see you having fun with your family Andrea I'm glad you enjoyed your weekend and got to visit with your sister and family. I think you know what I did I manage to fall going up the stairs. Viv even wrote a funny poem about it. So my weekend was kind of spent taking it easy. Then I took my little granddaughter to her ballet class. Take care. hugs, Connie

I know I've mentioned before something about our cabin in the mountains. That's how we spend most weekends in the summer, since it is 5,000 elevation, and so much cooler in the pines, than here in the valley where we live. We have campfires, hikes, walks around the lake, and a lot of nature, but no cell, internet, tv (except for movies I take along)...so we enjoy a lot of down time with family, and our dogs. That's our Saturday. Yours sounds so wonderful! Happy you were able to enjoy your family!

You sure had a wonderful Saturday and spent it well. I'm happy you got to spend time with your sister & daughter -- very nice photo of you :)! Mine was so blahhhhh. Did school stuff, transferred picture files, my external drive kept on bonking out on me, so frustrating and then mind planned in my head what to do with pastry puff. Oh, I did go to church, then had a Chinese dinner. Then fell asleep watching Batman Vs. Superman. Man, that film was draaggging. I didn't even reach the part where they fought.

I sat around the house and listened to the constant banging of hammers as I was having my roof shingled. I took Buddy to the vet and I wrote a poem and then watched old movies on TV. Basically nothing! My life is so exciting, I have to sit on my hands to keep from waving at everybody that passes by.

I spent Saturday being domestic and thinking of a friend's smile as she drove with family on wheels of love to embrace and encourage her nephew while enjoying one of her favorite plays. My guess is that she made a grand memory. CayCay

thanks, Caycay, and that is one of the few good things about NOT living close to one's relatives. When we DO get to see them, it becomes a very precious memory.

Sounds as if you had a really good day, Andrea. Living here, close to the Chiltern Hills we have some lovely country houses. I went to Grey's Court with some friends. It was built as a Tudor Manor house by the Grey family. Related to the unfortunate Lady Jane Grey. Much developed up to the Twentieth Century it is now owned by the National Trust and used as a set for television dramas. Parts of Downton Abbey (not sure if this has been aired in the U.S.) was filmed here.

We usually hike on weekends, but it is too hot and humid, and there is too much poison ivy and ticks (prime hiking season here is fall and winter). We drove out to explore a new state park that recently opened and had a swim in a beautiful clear creek. And then, there's always some work to be done from home.

Me, I took a leisurely walk into town by the brook and watched the Herons, a little bit of shopping, then four pints of Thistly Cross cider, matured in whisky casks until it registered 6.4% strength, which meant I could put my feet up in the afternoon and completely ruin my cryptic crossword. Glad you had an enjoyable chunk of quality family time, Andrea. Viv x

My hubby was working on the Manx Grand Prix motorbike races and my son also went to watch the event. I visited mum early then sat and listened to the commentary on the radio, did gardening cooking and painted our patio table then I wrote a poem which has now turned into a collaboration and got POTW. Tomorrow is a bank holiday here on the Island and I will spend quality time with my hubby:-) So glad you are enjoying time out with your family - I love the music to Oklahoma and to see your nephew in it must have been fabulous :-) hugs jan xx
