Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held). A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Why No Comments Right Now, My Dear Cat Razmatazz & Prayers for my Dad

I had to have my dear cat put to sleep just now. She took a turn for the worse just the other day. I did not realize how much I would cry. If I had time, I would share a poem that I wrote for her in the past. I must have written at least three. But I need to hurry and pack, etc. My father is perhaps dying in a hospital far away and I am going to hop on a plane soon because I have not seen him in 13 years and I really want to see him a last time in case he passes away.

Please can you send prayers for my dad, Roger Miller? He did not raise me, so my sisters and I were not close with him. He has the horrible mental illness schizophrenia, but has been living a long comfortable life with his wife Cleofe from the philippines. Recently I learned from my son that my father was part of the one of the most legendary battles of the Korean War: Battle of Chosin Reservoir. My son used to serve as a Marine and he found out that my dad had been helping the doctors during that battle. I can't believe I never knew anything about this battle or how horrific it was, with Americans and UN soldiers outnumbered around 1 to 4 by their attackers!! My father came back home a completely different man after this. His mental illness came out and eventually my mother had to leave him. I have such a newfound repect for my dad hearing of what he witnessed from that war. It saddens me that my dad never talked to me about anything personal, and yet my son was able to learn about this on one of his visits to my dad. (my son lives not far from my father).

Finally, a big thanks to all the veterans out there who saw such horror and have to live with that pain forever. And my gratitude for the many who fought for freedom in this world and lost their precious lives in the process.

Thanks everyone who came here with kind words. I just got back but the very delayed flight I was on has made me unable to even be here now with time to catch up on comments. I am so thankful I got to go see my dad. I believe he will soon be on a type of hospice care, so it was very good that I saw him!

Andrea I am sorry to hear about your cat. I will be praying for your father. I lost my father a year ago. You can be proud of your father's service to our country as well as your son's. My son was a Marine as well. We lost him ten years ago in an auto accident. It is hard losing family and pets count as family too. My prayers are with you dear Andrea. God bless you.
