TO READ CLICK ON THE + BUTTON. I am a writer of poetry I come from a family of storytellers and this has helped me in my poetry. I have been writing since I could pick up a pen. Have written in all forms and won many, many contests with my poetry.  My poetry has been featured in lots of books.  I have created my own forms that are often used by poets worldwide. And I have extensivley studied the poems of old, the writers forms, word use, punctuation, rhyming and layout.  I have taken some Writing Classes and have been told over and over, I am a born poet, something that can never be taught.  Have been part of several poetry clubs locally. I have helped poets to edit their poems and helped them to improve their presentation. My own poems are quite often sad. I write of death and grief. You could say I write "graveyard poetry." And I write about experiences in my life, to complications of the world,  and not afraid to share my soul. But, I can and do write happy if I want to, and I love to write of nature and poems on spiritual introspective themes, sometimes I even write of romance. And people who know me, will verify that I like using quotes in my poetry and I enjoy writing for contest themes on Poetry Soup. I joke that I can make any theme sad. I enjoy sponsoring my own contests on Poetry since 2008 and have sponsored hundreds and hundreds of contests. I left the site for a brief time in 2011, removing all my poetry when my Muse went missing, but, after a near death experience returned later in 2012 and just picked up where I left off. I love art, all classical music, researching all things, nature, gardening, meditation, praying, peace and tranquility.  I collect books of all kinds, dictionaries, poetry books, art, even cookbooks,  I adore vintage jewelry, colored glass, and old dishes.  I adore the creaking, moaning old building where I live with a few mice.

Ten poems that define me as a poet . . . (from thousands)

1. The Dream Lingers https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/the_dream_lingers_408612 This poem was written after a near death experience, it stills haunts me, I could hear my mother calling me.

2. Safe In My Heart Forever https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/safe_in_my_heart_forever_549494 My mother was my anchor, the wings beneath my feet and my best friend, I miss her so very much.

3. Tattered Pages https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/tattered_pages_688344 At the end of the poem, a baby born, died and I was told he was adopted, my parents lied.

4. Dad's Workshop https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/dads_workshop_714811 I wrote this poem in 1997 but only posted it when I was posting on poetrysoup- it is about Dad.

5. Beautiful Scars https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/beautiful_scars_735565 This poem gives you just a small glimpse of the pain and grief I carry with me every single day.

6. And That Comes From Within https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/and_that_comes_from_within_1127173 My health is not that good, never has been and never will be, and no money will change my outcome.

7. in my green dream https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/in_my_green_dream_762889 I love this poem, dreamy and spiritual, I am all about nature in this one, come on a green journey.

8. A Lost Feather https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/a_lost_feather_783977 This poem is very meaningful to me, it speaks of my Ojibwe roots and of my ancestors in the sky.

9. "Kindness is the Key" https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/kindness_is_the_key_848785 When awful things happen to us in life it is easy to become mean and resentful but kind is better.

10. I Write Fragments https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/i_write_fragments_1243058 This poem sums up my journey in writing, fragments, snippets that drip, drip from my pen and mostly at night.

What is Writing ?

Blog Posted:12/21/2021 5:50:00 AM

Writing is putting words on paper via computer, pen or pencil.  But, writing is more than scribbling some words. Writing is a way of communicating a message.  It could take the form of narrative.  Narrative is writing that tells a story.  Real life narratives can include memoirs, journaling, diaries, poetry.  Fictional narratives can be short stories, even novels, myths, legends, poetry. Imagery is always important and can be found in all writing.  Words have power and can move a reader to thoughts and emotions or sometimes even anger and disgust. I learned this myself at a very early age that my poetry had the power to make people weep. But no matter where your creativity or artistry lies there is a type of creative writing to suit your interest.

Poetry is a type of writing in which words are used because of their beauty. It can be written in all types of forms, some very strict with specific syllable counts and rhyming. It can use meter or not, have stanzas or not.  It can be Free Verse, wild and free.

We need this medium so we can communicate, think, discover and learn, and share our innermost thoughts.  Whatever form of poetry you choose to write in, you are a creative writer. For me writing is a need, an urge that I cannot ignore for there are words always swirling in my mind.  Everything I see and feel can become a poem. Sometimes, I wish that I could turn this need off, but I cannot.

What are your thoughts about writing ?

Robert, that is an excellent answer and I see the "real you" in your poems. I hope you will continue to grow as a writer, gathering knowledge from books on how to write, keeping some and throwing away what does not fit you, but know the heart of a poet already exists within you ~ peace and tranquility _Constance

WoW! Constance, This is one of the best “answers” I’ve seen on “ What Is Writing?” You covered it all. For me “ writing” is a need as well. It was a lifeline for me, it brought healing to me from many years of pain. I also like to use it to uplift and inspire because that is what it did for me. To tell the truth, writing is so powerful and can do wonders. I don’t know if I answered your question. But I am so happy you wrote this blog. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year:-) Alexis

Alexis, thanks for the compliment on my blog, I agree with you that writing is a lifeline, and can heal pain and at the same time help others, you find out you are not alone. Writing is so powerful, and we are blessed that we can put words to paper, Merry Christmas ~ love and serenity _Constance

I write to inspire for happiness and contentment ...to me it is not of what we see, like how material possessions and vanity make people happy... for what for that minute when they bought what the Jones' have or looking marvelous, gorgeous with face lifts, fake boobs or whatever satisfy their fancies... happiness and contentment are the unseen, how your words could reach somebody, how your positive spirit lifts somebody, how you share your creativity through your thoughts, your words, your art and make somebody relate to them and smile... unbeknown to you.... Happy Holidays... To be considered good it takes ten years and 10,000 hours of practice... not even half way there... LOL....

I enjoyed seeing all the comments below. I relate especially to Anitha's reasons for writing as well as to what I already posted. Also I liked Milt's "for communication" idea. That is SO important. We all just want to be heard! Finally, if anyone is curious about Edward's "What Poetry Means To Me" that he refers to, this excellent poem is on the first page from when he started writing. Just go to the very end of his pages.

After seeing the length of Edward's pages, I clicked on "PoemTitle" at the top, it'll alphabetize his poems, and other than cardinal numerics and punctuations, for some reason it may start with a mix of poems ere the "A-list" appears. Click it again and you'll get to the "Z-list", whichever way is faster. Clicking on "Form" at the top, the same thing happens, it'll start off with your "ABC's", "Abecedarian's", and so on, Aloha!

Excellent blog topic, Constance. For me, it's not always about passion or emotion as I feel it is most often for you, Dear Heart. I write so many types of poems. I write them to recall a memory in a beautiful way, to amuse myself and try to be funny, or to exercise my brain sometimes (when I take part in challenges that truly do not even inspire me) but I am always amazed when something I originally did not feel inspired by actually DOES bring forth something GOOD from me. This is why I always tell people: don't wait to feel your muse. Take a challenge and just DO it!

Andrea, thanks for the compliment on my blog, I can tell the poems where you do put your passion/emotion in your words. I am the same way about challenges, I love that aspect of contests. I love to log on to PS and see a new contest challenge and I just DO it ~ love and serenity_Constance

Constance...as one who has taught creative writing in the past, I want to commend you on this marvelous, strong defense of writing. I am hoping some of our folks will take these words to heart, for we do have some "scribblers!" Even then, they are communicating, and that is a wonderful thing. Thanks so much, dear Constance, for this essay on writing. We all need it from time to time.

Oh, absolutely, Constance. We were all once "scribblers," I think we all start there. Then, we hone our craft in the same way all craftspeople do by practicing, experimenting, reaching, and hoping. We don't do it here, but criticism is enormously valuable, and that is why I recommend taking writing classes because our teachers will expand our abilities through creative evaluations of our work. Yes! Again, thank you, Constance. I have learned lots from you!

Milt, thanks for taking the time to read my words here. I did not realize you taught creative writing which makes your comment even more marvelous. Scribblers sometimes become poets but becoming a poet is not an easy road, it takes a lot of dedication and time and years to develop. I have been writing since a child, oh yes, I was once a scribbler ~ peace and tranquility _Constance

Constance thank you so much for sharing this... I agree with you... words can move a reader and make people weep... Writing relieves my stress along with other such recreation activities that I enjoy doing, and refreshes my mind... I feel happy when I write... Anything inspiring, I see, in nature, I feel like writing about it... Though, I have just started writing, getting inspired to write as and when I get time... I have read many beautiful deep old poems of yours, that did make me weep.. Hoping that I get time to read many wonderful poems of many talented poets here... I surely will read Edward's poem, that you mentioned below... Have a lovely blessed day my friend...Hugs... ~ Ani

There's an old poem of mine called "What Poetry Means To Me" that I think you'll find worthwhile. But poetry writing has always been a cathartic release for me. Inspiration blooms like a flower in my mind listening to life on a quotidian basis. Once in a blue moon, I do struggle to be inspired. Currently, for instance, I'm experiencing writer's block, but I'm fighting it. I always do, because i'm propelled by a prevailing interior mechanism and a nagging existential curiosity--that will never be satiated-- about the world around me. It's also a "need" for me.

Edward, I will read your poem for sure as I would like to know what your pen created. I have at times had writer's block and have gone back to old poems and rewritten them perhaps in a different form, it always amazes me when I look at old poems at how much I have grown as a writer. Also, I find writing Acrostic, Haiku, Senryu is a good way to motivate the MUSE. The need to write is almost painful at times. Seasons Greetings ~ peace and tranquility _Constance
