My people the Ojibwe believe in one Holy Great Spirit, Kitchi Monitou, the
creator and source of life. Anishinaabe is our spirituality, a system of life
beliefs, blending harmony, spirits and nature. We are guided by mothers,
fathers, grandfathers, grandmothers, elders and our spirit ancestors above.
Their teachings, and stories form the basis of what has been passed down
for generations, first written on birch bark scrolls. Stories, ceremonies and
symbols are important to us. We are taught from children, harmony and
balance, respectful behaviour. Each must experience vision quests, fasting
in solitude to find our spiritual guide. The seven grandfathers in the sky
teach us that the eagle represents unconditional love and compassion and
the wolf humility, the bear is bravery and courage, the raven is honesty,
the buffalo respect, the beaver wisdom, the turtle truth.

My mother and grandmother were storytellers, I would listen enthralled
by their voices, perhaps it is the reason I am a writer. The spirit of our
Holy Creator filled me with the ethics and morals to live my life in spirit.
We believe spirit inhabit the world in animals, plants, the elements, and
the celestial bodies. I have taken the eagle as my spiritual guide so I too
can fly high in the sky to be close of the creator.
