I  am a writer.  My poetry is sad, I write death, but I can write happy if I want to. I love art, classical music, reading, nature, meditation, dancing. I collect books, vintage clothes and  jewelry.   I adore the old building where I live with Snuggles Kitty. The avatar statue you see on my poems honors my elderly cat Smudges who died at 20 years. She loved to lay in the shade of the garden.

Ten poems that define me as a poet . . . (from thousands)

1. The Dream Lingers https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/the_dream_lingers_408612 This poem was written after a near death experience, it stills haunts me, I could hear my mother calling me.

2. Safe In My Heart Forever https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/safe_in_my_heart_forever_549494 My mother was my anchor, the wings beneath my feet and my best friend, I miss her so very much.

3. Tattered Pages https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/tattered_pages_688344 At the end of the poem, a baby born, died and I was told he was adopted, my parents lied.

4. Dad's Workshop https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/dads_workshop_714811 I wrote this poem in 1997 but only posted it when I was posting on poetrysoup- it is about Dad.

5. Beautiful Scars https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/beautiful_scars_735565 This poem gives you just a small glimpse of the pain and grief I carry with me every single day.

6. And That Comes From Within https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/and_that_comes_from_within_1127173 My health is not that good, never has been and never will be, and no money will change my outcome.

7. in my green dream https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/in_my_green_dream_762889 I love this poem, dreamy and spiritual, I am all about nature in this one, come on a green journey.

8. A Lost Feather https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/a_lost_feather_783977 This poem is very meaningful to me, it speaks of my Ojibwe roots and of my ancestors in the sky.

9. "Kindness is the Key" https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/kindness_is_the_key_848785 When awful things happen to us in life it is easy to become mean and resentful but kind is better.

10. I Write Fragments https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/i_write_fragments_1243058 This poem sums up my journey in writing, fragments, snippets that drip, drip from my pen and mostly at night

Do you write your poems with a pen?

Blog Posted:1/7/2020 10:32:00 AM

Many writers love the feel of a pen, some like the way the ink flows smoothly from their expensive pens; perhaps it was a gift meaningful, or you just love it; others write with a cheap ball-point pen, with the gnawed end and missing cap. Some writers like blue ink, black ink,  or even colored ink. I am a black ink type when I do need to use ink, the gel type that rolls on the page.

But actually, I like a long pencil, super sharp, that I keep sharpening all day long to write my poems in my writing journal... it is never used to a nub, as I begin each day with a new pencil, because I edit a lot.   I find pens . . . well so final _

So, I was wondering what do you use ?

Constance

I write all my poems in my head, usually listening to soft music or in the shower and then just type them up into here.

TS, well, that is great you do not have to write anything down, from your head right to Poetrysoup, that would never ever work for me, pages and pages written before my poem is done _Constance
Date: 1/8/2020 6:11:00 PM
I write in script with a black pen, and usually use typewriting paper packs of 500 because I draw a lot of lines through many sentences to either eliminate them or re-write them...it just seems more raw and personal to me than any other way...Oh, the paper I throw away!

Frederic, and thus I say pencil and an eraser is the key.. but I do love black ink and even the great poets of old who are famous for their poetry drew lines through their words _Constance

I use the computer. Note to PS-A new feature I would like to see are poems that are handwritten by members. For instance, I enjoy reading Constance's poems, however, I would enjoy them more so if she wrote some poems in cursive, print or even calligraphy. I think having some poems handwritten adds a signature, personal and intimate touch. I think a reader learns about a poet not only from their poetry but even from their writing. If these poems are gifts, or of our legacy long after we're gone, having some poems handwritten (I would think) is deeply cherishable.

Connie, thanks for the compliment and oh this is a beautiful comment, I am told my handwriting is beautiful, it would be nice to hand write some of my poems for my poetic friends because I agree with you a handwritten poem is very special _Constance

How? Scan, photocopy.
Date: 1/8/2020 7:37:00 AM
Some poems I write long hand with a flowing roller ball pen. Other times I open up a blank word document and I type the new poem directly into the computer.

Caren, yes both methods work to create a poem, but somehow the image of you writing long hand with a flowing roller pen seems much more poetic to me _Constance

I use a pen but chew on the ends of them. Pens AND poems come to think of it.

Gary, oh yes the chewed up end and the pen with no cap but it is the poetry that matters in the end _Constance

I mostly write them on my computer. If I am away from my computer and my muse strikes I will write them with a pen. I am enjoying your fun blogs Constance, they are refreshing and a nice change! :)

Tania, I think I write in pencil because I am unsure of the words chosen and pretty darn sure I will change them, but I am impressed with your confidence to use pen, which I find permanent and I hate having to cross out words and lines etc . Thanks so much for the compliment on my blog _Constance
Date: 1/7/2020 3:29:00 PM
I almost always write by hand (not typing) because I like to lie on my bed relaxing while i write, leaning against my little fluffed up pillow rest. I do not care what writing instrument i use. What difference whether pencil or ink? For me, it's whatever I find around my house. I grab it and then I get going!!!

Andrea, I like the image of you nestled in your cozy spot writing, but to imagine such beautiful poetry was created with just any old pencil or pen is fathomless to wrap my head around _ Constance

If I'm at home I use pen or pencil or type straight onto my PC, but more often than not when I'm out I write with pencil and note pad. Last year I was sitting in a pub listening to live music and I was writing. Someone came over and asked what I was doing - they were amazed I was writing poetry and even more surprised I used a pencil and pad - seems most people use phones or tablets and electronic notebooks.:-) hugs Jan xx

Jan, yes it seems us pencil and pad writers are a breed unique in these days of cell phones, tablets etc _ Constance

Yup, though I will grab the most convenient implement nearby, so some of my notebook writes are in 3 different colors lol --But I have reasons for penning instead of keyboarding and that is to reference crossouts and deletions (obvious edits). My most recent poem was over 5 days with all of the above. Occasionally I'll take something I thought I wanted in one write but didn't work and include it in a future write or go back in the notebook to one I gave up on and finish it, something it would be difficult or impossible otherwise. The notebook also shows me change of style and substance more than a simple printing of the poem submitted, which I also do. It shows me its construction/evolution, or even its rejection.

Nina, oh there is nothing better than to waft beneath a tree with a notebook . . . that's a beautiful image. I understand what you are saying about writing with technology at your fingertips to edit and move things but for me I use an eraser to edit... if I have a good thought that I cannot use I just write it in the journal separate _Constance

I do so many edits, I just can’t manage in a notebook! Honestly the poem I’m currently working on I would have had to give up and rewrite ten times already. If I take out any major bits, I just cut and paste them to the bottom of the document in case I want to reinstate them - it’s the only way I can manage! I do long to waft beneath a tree with a notebook though...

Craig,I suppose the implement is not important but the writing is the goal, and exactly what you said, like a history of your writing progression and yes perhaps to find something written that did not work in a specific poem _ Constance
Date: 1/7/2020 12:24:00 PM
Shame on me, my index finger, can't remember the last time I used a pen or pencil. Tom

I simply make corrections, Constance:-) My rough drafts usually look messy and disorganized anyway, lol. Once I finish all the "doctoring" I write the final draft on a new sheet of paper.
