TO READ CLICK ON THE + BUTTON. I am a writer of poetry I come from a family of storytellers and this has helped me in my poetry. I have been writing since I could pick up a pen. Have written in all forms and won many, many contests with my poetry.  My poetry has been featured in lots of books.  I have created my own forms that are often used by poets worldwide. And I have extensivley studied the poems of old, the writers forms, word use, punctuation, rhyming and layout.  I have taken some Writing Classes and have been told over and over, I am a born poet, something that can never be taught.  Have been part of several poetry clubs locally. I have helped poets to edit their poems and helped them to improve their presentation. My own poems are quite often sad. I write of death and grief. You could say I write "graveyard poetry." And I write about experiences in my life, to complications of the world,  and not afraid to share my soul. But, I can and do write happy if I want to, and I love to write of nature and poems on spiritual introspective themes, sometimes I even write of romance. And people who know me, will verify that I like using quotes in my poetry and I enjoy writing for contest themes on Poetry Soup. I joke that I can make any theme sad. I enjoy sponsoring my own contests on Poetry since 2008 and have sponsored hundreds and hundreds of contests. I left the site for a brief time in 2011, removing all my poetry when my Muse went missing, but, after a near death experience returned later in 2012 and just picked up where I left off. I love art, all classical music, researching all things, nature, gardening, meditation, praying, peace and tranquility.  I collect books of all kinds, dictionaries, poetry books, art, even cookbooks,  I adore vintage jewelry, colored glass, and old dishes.  I adore the creaking, moaning old building where I live with a few mice.

Ten poems that define me as a poet . . . (from thousands)

1. The Dream Lingers https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/the_dream_lingers_408612 This poem was written after a near death experience, it stills haunts me, I could hear my mother calling me.

2. Safe In My Heart Forever https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/safe_in_my_heart_forever_549494 My mother was my anchor, the wings beneath my feet and my best friend, I miss her so very much.

3. Tattered Pages https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/tattered_pages_688344 At the end of the poem, a baby born, died and I was told he was adopted, my parents lied.

4. Dad's Workshop https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/dads_workshop_714811 I wrote this poem in 1997 but only posted it when I was posting on poetrysoup- it is about Dad.

5. Beautiful Scars https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/beautiful_scars_735565 This poem gives you just a small glimpse of the pain and grief I carry with me every single day.

6. And That Comes From Within https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/and_that_comes_from_within_1127173 My health is not that good, never has been and never will be, and no money will change my outcome.

7. in my green dream https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/in_my_green_dream_762889 I love this poem, dreamy and spiritual, I am all about nature in this one, come on a green journey.

8. A Lost Feather https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/a_lost_feather_783977 This poem is very meaningful to me, it speaks of my Ojibwe roots and of my ancestors in the sky.

9. "Kindness is the Key" https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/kindness_is_the_key_848785 When awful things happen to us in life it is easy to become mean and resentful but kind is better.

10. I Write Fragments https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/i_write_fragments_1243058 This poem sums up my journey in writing, fragments, snippets that drip, drip from my pen and mostly at night.

What time of day do you write ?

Blog Posted:1/3/2020 1:00:00 PM

A question . . .

I like to write in the early morning, it seems my mind is open-wide and I am full of inspiration, sometimes, I go to my writing desk and just begin.. perhaps inspired by a contest theme, or a dream, or a thought, or even a sadness in my heart, I have not even had breakfast or a coffee yet, how long I dwell there is probably too long... it depends on the requirement of my day.

Another time of the day I write is late at night and not sure why inspiration hits me at 3am but it does and I can write very well in the middle of the night and must pull myself away to sleep.

And then, sometimes I just write no matter the time of day !

So, I am wondering-  what is your best time of the day to write ?

Inspiration springs up unexpectedly for me on any given time of the day, Constance:-) That's why I always carry a pocket notebook and pen everywhere I go! I love writing "in the moment" and have written several in real time, "Waiting Out The Rain, "Crescent Moon Frowning," "On The Shore", to name a few.

Edward, inspiration comes to me always at odd times, times I cannot stop what I am doing to write it down, and I keep repeating it in my head hoping I will remember it by the time I get to paper _Constance

With me, it's never been a matter of time taken to write. A thought comes to mind, maybe a line in a book, lyrics of a song, clouds moving swiftly over the pines...anything that lends itself to what I might perceive worthy of poetic verse is fuel to make me sit at the keyboard or write on any scrap of paper I can grab. I sulk over thoughts that were lost because I had no way of capturing them. Memory is not a friend of a poet. Constance, I applaud you for creating a blog that does not cause dissension on the site. Instead, it serves as a cohesive bond among poets.

Lin, first thank you for the compliment on my blog, I appreciate that... my memory is not good either there are just too many things swirling inside this head, and I am forever the poem to be written mode, as everything I see or experience is potential for a poem.. my friends laugh when I say, I could write a poem about that... but you know what I mean, its like the poet inside never shuts off_

First an idea then a spark and just keep adding an tweaking over a few days. I don't have a set time of day but soon as I get an idea I jot it down on notes on my phone so it doesn't fade away. Tom

Tom, I have started using my cell phone like that also, so the idea does not fade away, because if I don't it will, there are just too made things whirling around in my head.. i like the idea of adding to a poem over days... I bet those end up being your best _

My time for writing is in the evening, but I've always been a night person. I've started caring a pad with me since I never know when a though runs by. I even find myself using a receipt when I don't have anything to write when it comes spontaneous

Eve, I just recently got a tablet and take it everywhere almost but I have written on odd things with a borrowed pen or pencil.. and always say to self, how can it be a writer leaves home without a journal or paper _
Date: 1/4/2020 2:08:00 PM
it all depends on what emotion a particular piece of instrumental music I'm listening too stirs, whether day or night, sometimes it stirs a memory, sometimes it stirs creative imaginations, sometimes it stirs no poetry at all, sometimes I'll chose a particular piece of music that will lead me in a direction I want to write, the common theme is music

Frederic, I love your music inspired poetry, so beautiful. I often listen to classical music before writing and do some meditation.. and then my mind feels open wide and I begin . . .

My linguine sticks best to the wall (I think) when I'm anchored to a barstool during happy hour. I'd have a laptop in front of me, a beer filling my drought, and my typed words would dance all over people's feet on the dance floor. I had a great time.

Connie, maybe your words are just drunk and dancing, I have done that! But I agree anywhere can be a place to write because we write from deep inside us and our surroundings disappear _
Date: 1/4/2020 10:52:00 AM
Thinking about what you read about writing that we writers should have set times for writing; I agree more with your perspective. I don't see how that could be helpful when it comes to poetry; possibly because mine is mostly spontaneous. But maybe it is helpful when it comes to writing books!

Lolol you are absolutely correct! I lose many of my poetic thoughts for exactly that reason! They come either when I cannot right or do not have anything to write with!

FJ, I understand what you mean about spontaneous and that is awesome but I would have to have tons of paper available to stop and write - I am so used to my dedicated time that I just slip into it like a fluttering bird and all my thoughts come drifting back to me (of course, all the assorted scraps of collected notes and scribbles on papers, even napkins, help) _

Harry, I worked a night shift once in nursing besides almost killing me, I was like a Zombie, I am totally unsuited to night working but creating poetry at night saved my sanity during that time and I still write in the night_

I wish I had a set time. Whenever she wakes up; could be anywhere, anytime, triggered by anything. ...when she actually does wake up -_- But the deepest ones are almost always at night.

FJ, I read in a book on writing that we writers should have set times for writing and I tried that but nothing happened so I just have to go with the flow, but I seem a bit sharper in the early morning but at night I can go deep and dark too, and I love that _
Date: 1/3/2020 6:56:00 PM
I write whenever my muse strikes at any time of day or night:-) got a notepad by my bed as I often get inspiration when i wake up - especially with full limericks which I have to write down:-) super blog Constance and I second Wayne's comment on it being a legit one not simply here to stir the soup pot:-( hugs Jan xx

Jan, I need pads everywhere, in every room, and my purse, backpack because no telling when the muse will strike and one must be ready, perhaps just jotting down a few words so as not to forget the thought, thank you for the compliment on my blog _

i still work and get up very early (430 am) i write whenever i find free time... weekends are the best for me...if my muse is haunting me i will text her song to myself and then continue with it or post it...i do a lot of bus scribbles when i am sitting in my bus awaiting on the students to come out of the school...todays blue jean poem was a quick bus scribble... i am often inspired by scenes when i am out and about...good question :) hugs

Sandra, I am exactly the same, except I don't get up at 4:30 am! On the bus or at the coffee shop I am composing in my head or to my cell even sometimes in my dance class, yes often views out of the bus window inspire, a quick glimpse perhaps that strikes me as the bus speeds by_
Date: 1/3/2020 4:23:00 PM
I often write in the mornings. I will write when my muse strikes. I have woken up before with a poem in my head. I will write at other times of the day when my muse strikes but it's mostly in the am. I like your blog Constance! :)

by the way, the best advice anyone ever gave me (when I said to them, "I just don't feel like writing") was when a prolific poet I once knew told me "The muse will always come if you JUST WRITE" (if Tommy sees this, that is my reply to what he said about hating to write for contests)

Constance, this is a great blog topic. I write when I set my mind to it. When I have few distractions , I like it best. I just tell myself, Ok, settle down to it and WRITE. It ends up being weekends, often on Sunday when I am mostly alone or whenever I just force myself to do it. Unlike many poets, writing is more a mental exericse for me. I wish I was more "inspired" by things around, but that is not typical for me. I am more often inspired by the contest themes than anything else (or sometimes nature or a movie scene that really hits me)
