Welcome to my page!

I am a man of many interests - TOO many, I think, lol - and because of that I never gave writing the attention I should have when I was young. I started writing poetry in December of 2016, and joined Poetry Soup at the same time. I am currently working on an R&B/Soul album for a major label, so, as has usually been the case, poetry does not get the time I'd like to give it, (though I plan to change that in the future, and write a book-or-two, a sci-fi novel and an autobiography) ...

I like to incorporate classic styles and phrasing into a modern frame when I write poetry, and try to cover a wide range of genres, but I enjoy the darkly sensual the most, despite its limited audience. I hope you'll give my rather unusual style a chance, read a piece-or-two, and leave a comment, if you'd be so kind. My sincere congratulations to all the winners in my recent contest "WATER & SKY" ... and a heartfelt thank you to ALL the entries. This was easily the MOST difficult contest (to judge) that I've had to date, and almost everyone deserved a placement, but as a premiere contest, HAD to be whittled down to ten. I judge completely blind, so PLEASE don't take an omission as a slight ...

The level of quality between 1st and 20th was extraordinarily thin, and I had to leave the final decisions up to "little" things like nuance, phrasing, metre, and even how it lay upon my spirit, or dripped off the tongue, with the final 15 very close behind! I know it's overused, but I literally could have awarded placements for every poem. There was only one that did not fit the theme, but there were two that had names on them ...

PLEASE, folks, take the extra moments needed to read the directions and KNOW Poetry Soup rules ... poems submitted with names on them violate the "blind" judging policy, and this is a VERY important factor! Also, if you are translating from a foreign language, (or English is not your first language), please do your best to make sure the grammar and spelling are correct and make SENSE ...

There are some free software programs available online, but they aren't always accurate, so try to have a friend or family member who is more adept at English help you out, if possible. I do NOT disqualify because of grammar or spelling, but in a close contest like this one, where there are SO many wonderful writes, it MAY come down to those things as a final deciding factor ...

This wonderful concoction called "Poetry Soup" is just plain RIFE with talented word "chefs", and it's very important, especially with contests entries, to present your best poetic chowder, and give attention to all the spices and flavorings and details. EVERY single entry was absolutely wonderful, and NO ONE should come away from this feeling like a loser ... such excellent, excellent work, everyone ...

So this is your 7th contest, Greg? (just reading your comment to Constance). I know how difficult it is placing people in a Premiere contest. That is why I do not do them any more. (well I haven't done a contest in a long time now, but maybe I should do one again). Anyway, i feel honored to be on our winners' list and thank you for my placement. Congrats to all your winners. I know you are trying hard to be a fair judge. Best of luck with your next one.

My pleasure, Andrea ... this was SO tough this time, to whittle 35 GREAT poems down to TEN is like torture, especially when almost everyone is a friend - you KNOW some people will take it personally, (as I often do, lol). Superb entries in this one, right to the last. Blessings and congrats!

This is only my 7th contest, (still being a "newbie" here), so I imagine, out of 245+ entries, one-out-of-seven is a good deal above average. I honestly love your work, Constance, and the entries this time were separated by very little, (as I stated). With premiere contests there are always WAY more non-placements than otherwise, and most everyone feels overlooked, sadly. The regular contests are way more fun, but I think the site needs the premieres, too, just to keep standards high. If it helps at all, I have a LONG list of judges who have NEVER given me a placement ... again, I think just an odds thing, at least for those who are truly judging "blind".
