at times you try with all you are
bide and breathe your very best
to please the ones who love you -
swell the throbs within your chest
and yet there’s still so many folks
can’t quite come to understand
the dark and angry sea you tack
just to reach that promised land
so much pain, responsibility
and duty chart your course
so you steer a lonely ocean
to the bounties of its source
and maybe when at last you find
the soft sands at heaven’s hem
you’ll anchor and they’ll finally see
that you did it all … for them.
