All kinds make a world

Blog Posted:5/5/2017 7:26:00 AM

"All kinds make a world" is something my mother-in-law used to say.

I have been thinking of this whenever I read the debates what constitutes "real" and "good" poetry, hear the disdain about old fashioned writing in rhyme as opposed to edgy modern free verse, read disparaging comments about humorous poetry.

I was at a poetry reading recently where local poets read from their works. Very different styles. One older gentlemen read a series of short poems on animals; they were all just a few lines, rhymed, slightly humorous, and part of a project intended for kindergarteners, i.e. five year olds. And they were GOOD. They were not modern, had no earth shattering new insights, but were exactly the kind of poem a five year old can love and easily memorize. And that is a wonderful thing, because for many kids, this can be the door to poetry. They made poetry accessible and fun. For what they were intending to do, they were among the best poems read that night.

I am also thinking of the joy a simple poem can bring that is written for an occasion. For my father's 80th birthday, I wrote a humorous rhyming poem about him that could be sung to a melody, with a refrain in which the entire party could join. It was a hit for the party and served this purpose much better than any "good" poem could have. (Those went into a book I gave as a present, to be read at leisure)

My grandmother loved sentimental poems. Song lyrics need to be metered and rhymed. Haiku evoke poetic images. Limericks make people chuckle. Deep poems full of metaphors make people think about the world in new ways. Dramatic ballads can make a kid fall in love with poetry (ask me how I know).

People also write for different reasons. I stopped participating in a certain critique  forum because I found that it was killing the joy for me to have my peoms ripped apart brutally. I write because it gives me joy, and decided I am unwilling to have that taken away from me for the sake of improvement. Other people write to be published, to leave a legacy for posteriority, to advocate for a cause, to give other people joy, to heal their souls.

I think all of these are prefectly fine reasons to write.

All kinds make a world.

"Ripped apart brutally..." While indeed poetry is very subjective, there is usually quite a difference between criticism being constructive, and it being mean-spirited. I don't see anything wrong with some serious deconstructing of poems, deep analysis, etc., yet that is not the same thing as saying or inferring that the author is a bad person because they wrote the poem, and sometimes it's as simple as that - as with many interactions in life, if somebody has a conscious or subconscious desire to hurt the other person, it will show.

No, Ruben, they did not happen here - it was a certain critique forum which I do not wish to name. If you happen to come across it, you will know.

I agree 100% Agnes. What you describe is so harsh. Good grief.... Insecure egos trying to massage themselves.

Critique is definitely valuable. I think people respond best to critique if it is offered in a spirit of support and kindness. Calling another poet's work "meaningless drivel" or telling them to stop writing is not helpful. While I wish for more opportunities for critique on Soup, I appreciate the atmosphere of kind support. A group where people pride themselves in tearing down another person and where reputation and status come from being the bluntest, most devastating critic does not help all poets to become better; some will simply quit, and that is a shame.

I am agreeing with Keith a lot today. Yes, what YOU say and what everyone else says! A compass in all the different directions. That is poetry.

PS-- no workshop, no group, should EVER brutalize a piece while providing feedback!! There is a difference between ignorant insults that serve no purpose to a thoughtful, helpful, constructive criticism... which should always first see what SHINES in the work, then, and only then, provide a suggestion or two which could strengthen the piece. Not that everyone should want feedback!!! Not saying that. (Repeat not saying that.) But I just have to say that what you received is not TRUE feedback. Hey, glad you're on Soup. Write how you want! Joy is the best reason to write and share.

Great positive blog, Agnes. Sometimes, a writer has to run far to find they've strayed TOO far from home...then slowly, so slowly, they come back. I'm at that point. I've taken in all this "stuff" and I'm sorting through it, deciding what I want to keep and what I want to toss. Poets, all writers, express themselves for too many reasons to list. One poet here uploaded a lifetime of poetry because he knew he had only a few months to live. His family would then have access to his thoughts, musings, introspections... for that family, his words were far more beautiful than any prize winning poem. So, yes... all kinds...all reasons.. and all GOOD. Cheers.
