Apologies - Eileen Manassian's Blog

About Eileen Manassian

I guess you could say I'm a citizen of the world. I've traveled....and I've lived parts of my life in Iran, Lebanon, the US, and Cyprus. I am proud of my Armenian heritage. I was born in Tehran, Iran and soon after that, my family went to the States for my dad to work on his MA degree and many years later, to work on his Ed.D. I have a lot of the Middle East and the West in me, and at times....I feel confused about my identity. I do, however, cling to my Armenian roots and am outspoken about recognition by the world of the Armenian Genocide that took place over 100 years ago.

Since my parents had no common language, the language spoken in our home was English. Yes, I am most fluent in English, and I think, dream, and converse in that language, though I do speak 5 other languages to varying degrees! :)

I am melancholy/sanguine by nature and feel everything very keenly. My highs are SUPER HIGH...and my lows...SUPER LOW! I guess you could say...I'm INTENSE. I'm passionate about poetry to the point of obsession.

The events that have colored my life are the death of my mother due to MS and the war in Lebanon. As a child, it was hard for me to come to grips with the fact that my mother was ill, and to see her go from being a vibrant, well-loved teacher to a wheelchair bound, isolated woman was a very harrowing experience. I do believe, though, that there is a resurrection day and that, by His grace, I will see my Mama fully restored...free of wheelchair, able to sing, laugh, and smile again. The war in Lebanon...bombs landing all around, nights spent in bomb shelters.. has also scarred me to some degree.

What I'm most proud of? That would be my daughter...Shereen Natalie Ghali. She is the light of my life. Her name in Farsi means SWEET! :)

Currently, I teach English at Middle East University in Beirut, Lebanon. Poetry Soup has been a haven for me....most of the time! ;) I've developed amazing friendships here that are very genuine and real. My dream is to one day have my name on a volume of poetry! One can always dream....Thank you for making the effort to get acquainted. God bless!

Hello Soupers.....

Just wanted to write a quick note of apology to those of you who have been visiting my poems and blogs of late. Please don't consider me ungrateful. I've just had a lot of activity in my life lately. Since Christmas, it's been one thing after another...my house was constantly filled with visiting family members, and then I had my sweet daughter come to stay for a month. I've had some health issues, and just last week I had to deal with the pressure that comes with the end of an academic semester of teaching which includes preparing finals, correcting thought papers and essays, and handing in grades. My daughter left this morning and her visit has been a very emotional one for both of us. Let's just say....at times I felt like I was simply....comatose.....and not in a cute way like this kitty!

I posted a poem now and again just to keep my sanity, but keeping up with visits and comments has been difficult. Please accept this group apology to those of you who genuinely care and have shown that by visiting my poems and sending me mail to check up on me. I do appreciate it so very much.

i'm on semester break and before I start working on course outlines again, I wanted to let you all know that I appreciate your sincerity and love....

Hubby travels a lot and my daughter is studying in Europe, so I usually have time for PS...In fact, it keeps me company. Thanks for understanding. Hubby gets grumpy sometimes, but sometimes I think he is relieved that I have something to keep me occupied...especially when he travels, which is quite often. When he sees me counting syllables on my fingers...he turns loquacious on me! ;) Attention getter! Distraction mode set on...Anyway, thanks for understanding dear...Kitty is cute, isn't she? How come they get to look cute when they are comatose...not fair!

Thanks, Soul Sister. I am feeling better. Oh...it feels so good to feel better. My daughter left this morning. I was worried about her....she sounded happy, and so that has brought me great joy. Honestly, my daughter's well being affects me greatly. I know you can relate, dear. :) Thanks for understanding. That was why I posted about depression on FB. I need people to understand and give me what I need to get through it. I hope you have a good support system going for you.
