Walk a Mile

I put on your shoes
Tried to walk a mile
Sadly they were way to tight
I felt an old nail digging into my soul
I tried loosening the laces
However the knots were way too tight
Pain coursed through my body with each step
I walked through a puddle
Water poured through the holes
I became chilled to the bone

I stared at my sore feet
These had been lovely shoes at one time
Shining with such possibility
Now they have been scuffed
Neglected
Walked through the mud
Left out in the cold
Cracked
Hardened
The protection they offered
Has long gone away

So I wonder
Is it not time
For a new pair of shoes

I love it! The comparison between shoes, the person wearing and the shoes belonging to the other and the feelings of both ..... I love your poems... I'm not sure how I seem to connect! Thanks

I loved this, although, I love all of your poems.((: This was melancholy, yet almost hopeful for a new beginning. Very touching. c:

I felt like I was these lonely forgotten shoes. Well, they had a good life, and it's time. One day I'll be a pair of old discarded shoes, we all will! Ugh.

Richard; this is beautiful. You never know how another person feels - until you have walked a mile in their shoes. So go and buy that person a new pair of shoes. Thanks for sharing this wonderful poem. Lucilla

Reading you and Becca's conversation... I am really touched to be talked about in such a kind manner... you guys rock! I believe the main reason I read it as "living another persons life" is by what you said in the beginning "I put on YOUR shoes"... but maybe I was thinking too literal... haha....

Ha! Well this was food for thought. I wonder if you tire of living someone else's life, feeling if it's been scuffed, soaked, and beaten overtime... a good way to say "it's been fun but it's best we be moving on". Good work!

Thanks Timothy, I was speaking more about how people tend to wear their old lives when in fact they have the power to change their circumstances. I do know that some things are beyond our control but no nearly as many as we imagine.

Its time!. Treat yourself. I always feel a bit bad when I get rid of something like those shoes that have served me well. Enjoyed the read. BG

Sometimes they get too old and are no longer comfortable, I do know what you mean though. It seems extra hard for us guys to let go of old shoes and clothing.
