I grew up in Germany and started writing poetry as a child. I wanted to be a pirate or a writer or an opera singer and ended up becoming a physicist. I moved to the US in 2002 and live in a small town in the Midwest. After more than a decade of being unable to write in either language, I resumed writing poetry, now in English, in 2014. I am also a hiker and photographer. Some of my poetry and nature photography is on my website cairnsandflowers.com

Dear PoetrySoup Friends,

the semester has started, I am teaching 540 students this semester; I also moved my son to college and have to take care of some issues - and that's why I have not been keeping up with Soup. I feel bad for not having followed your poetry, congratulated the contest winners, thanked everybody for their comments on my poems, paid return visits to your pages. My apologies.

I will never manage to catch up on all I missed, so the best I can hope for is to jump back in when things have quieted down  and get a fresh start. I miss writing and reading poetry!

Agnes

Hello Agnes, you are obviously a very busy lady. I am curious though at what age did you stop wanting to be a pirate. The wonderful thing about poetry is, you can be a Pirate when ever you want, kind regards, Kevin

I think around age 12, when I realized that there were no more sail ships, and that I would be at a serious disadvantage being a girl :)

Agnes, I was like you in JUly, on a small vacation and hardly able to keep up. We all understand. You teach a LOT more students than I do. I only teach small classes in a private adult ESL school.

HOLY SUPERWOMAN! So, let me get this straight, you're a physicist, professor, poet and photographer who also rock climbs and you are dealing with empty nest syndrome ? Uh... I think your soup friends get that you're busy. EAT YOUR WHEATIES. ;)

Yes, I do have more time, since I also no longer homeschool - but the empty nesting is definitely a transition. I was sobbing when my daughter left three years ago, because were were very close and very much alike and just spent so much time together. It took me many months to get used to it. This time around it is easier, because I have done it before, he is introverted and never spent that much time hanging out with me, and he is close and can come home on many weekends. Still, getting used to the new normal is weird. Nobody to cook for.

Andrea, I think there are many many levels to experiencing an empty nest. I didn't mean to imply that she is sobbing into a pillow each day. But every other empty nester I've spoken to has said that there is a small period of adjustment (its still the first week of Sept.!) Parents can enjoy the freedom and still miss having their kids home.

is she experiencing empty nest syndrome? I remember rather enjoying all the time I had when my two left for college!!!

Jan's right, the soup is quiet right now. However, I think everyone understands that your life comes first. Hope to read you when you can get there.

I too am not as active at the moment and know I am missing out on lots of new poems and contests. I don't have my laptop which is slowing me down too. You are so busy with work and life issues just drop by when you have time. Soup is so quiet at the moment and I will try and get on when time allows but add my congrats to those contest winners I don't have time to read at the moment:-( hugs Jan xx
