Can you choose your themes?

Blog Posted:5/17/2017 4:38:00 PM

Cyndi raised some interesting questions on Brian's blog on poetry as a mirror of society. She pointed out that poetry should not just about the beautiful, but also about the ugly, and that it is important for poets to address the wrongs in society - to which I completely agree.

This got me thinking how we choose what to write about, and to which extent we even can choose. I feel drawn to certain themes that urge me to write about them (for me, these are often observations in nature), and I do not feel the urge to write about other topics that interest and move me - they just dont move me to make poetry. I write about the sparrow but not about genocide. From reading, it seems to me that many poets similarly feel drawn to certain types of topics. I have been thinking about why I am not usually writing about war or politics; I have strong opinions, can articulate them in intellectual debate - but do not feel I have anything to say poetically. But then, I am also not usually writing poems about love or children, even though I have people in my life whom I love very much, and certainly love my kids; not writing about something does not have to mean being indifferent.

Do you feel like you are usually writing about similar themes? Do you know why these are the themes that speak to you? Do you think you could write about anything that interests or moves you? If not, why do you think this is?

And on a related note: Is it wrong to write about the sparrow when there is genocide? Are little things trivial before the backgrop of the large themes of society? Is writing about birthday cake immoral when there is famine? (Cyndi, this is absolutely not meant as a stab at you; I think you raise a very interesting issue  here.)

I'm an emotional person (now there is an understatement.) So I write about what moves me-- which is everything: happy children, trees, the homeless guy named Bob who only knows one chord on his guitar but plays it with such spirit that I'd stop and talk and just listen to his beautiful cacophony, the child who drowned (locally) in the Nyth River but it took months to find him, friendship, sisterhood, all of it... My daughter is having her birthday this weekend and there will be cake. I can celebrate with cake while being AWARE of famine and recognize how fortunate I am... so that would come into play in any poem I write.. the contrast of have/have not. On Mother's Day, I asked that my family give to the famine instead of taking me out for dinner. I still celebrated and I felt true happiness that I'm a mother (especially after 16 years of infertility) So, I think its possible to write poetry that celebrates life while showing an awareness of the world at large. It certainly does not mean it has to be one or the other. A poem can contain joy and sorrow, easily, like happy tears, and it can be about nature AND humanity. That being said, poetry that feels like a quiet space to just appreciate what is beautiful, everlasting, natural and pure also must be written/expressed... I guess I think its about balance? I don't know... I just "feel" .... All in all though, I think its good on occasion to take stock of our themes, to see what it is that we are focused on and to question ourselves on who we WANT to be as writers... a little introspection never hurt a poet-- in fact, I'd go so far as to say that a little introspection can HELP a poet to grow, become more comfortable with their personal style and bring a new confidence to their writing. "This is who I am. This is what I write. This is why I write it. I like where I am and I like where I am going."

My life was very busy for the past years, homeschooling two children and working. When my daughter left for college, she left a large void - not just because I missed her, but because raising and homeschooling her had occupied a large part of my time and energy, and that void had to be filled with something meaningful. I could have busied myself with groups and classes, but that did not satisfy my need for purpose - resuming writing did.

It definitely is a spiritual connection for me. I always felt closer to the Divine when I am in nature. Maybe writing about it is a way to feel this closeness, but I also want to share this feeling with other people - so I am not writing purely for myself, but from a need to help other see the same beauty and wonder and feel the spirit that moves all creation.

I put off writing children's fiction because I needed time to be adult -- to write adult themed poetry, more mature content in my fiction. I hadn't planned to write children's books for another five years. But I gave it a try and was SHOCKED (!!!) that I loved it. It makes me happy. It makes me feel even closer to my daughter.

I have no idea how busy your life was/is, but maybe writing poetry is purely for YOU... I mean you finally get to have that time to be in a place where you want to be and it's a place devoid of war and disease and the demands on your time/life... its a place of SIMPLICITY where you get to zoom in on the environment and quietude? Does that make sense?

Maybe, for *you* poetry is a kind of spiritual connection to nature, a path away from YOU and YOURS to the flora and fauna that you find beautiful and 'centering?' Just as some pray, meditate or run, do yoga, tai chi? You WRITE as way to connect to that peace, distant yourself from the chaos of life? (Me <---guessing?)

Thanks for your beautiful response. It makes a lot of sense. I just question why *I* can't write about everything that moves me. I have two children whom I love very much, we have a great relationship - yet the first poem I was ever able to write about them was when my daughter left for college. I never wrote a single poem about their childhood, about all the things that moved me. And I don't know why that is. So, it's not even about big world themes like war and famine - the themes that find me are not all the things that move me and occupy my time and thoughts. Which I find odd.

So, I guess, to me, it's about what I feel passionate about, what I ache for, what I'd like to see change in my lifetime as well as who I love, what brings me joy, what guts me & DEMANDS to be written (most of the time I have no choice! I don't pick the theme, the theme picks (on) me. Good blog! And no :D I don't see it as a stab.. I see it as a thoughtful response, New Chum.

...movies like Rowanda, Crash, Blood Diamond, Slumdog Millionaire or Novels like 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' ' The Help' 'The Life of Pi' or yes, even poetry, can highlight global conditions, open eyes, call for change, make a small difference.

The fact is that the Western world (for the most part) HAS been apathetic to the third world. Part of that is that the media has been 'Trumping-up' politics, but that is also due to public demand. Writing- whether that be plays, novels, creative-non fiction, poetry, short stories.... can draw attention in a more real and personal way by giving reality LIFE. People have mentioned movies...

So, if I am sitting at that table with someone from South Sudan (and they are with me,now, often) then I don't feel comfortable saying, "Look what I have! I've got it so good." That is JUST ME. That is JUST how I feel!!!!

We are all different. I would write about the sparrow in a poem about genocide. And writing to me is ???... is sharing? It's (struggling to put this into words!) like sitting at a table face to face with many.

Sure, Doug. I am just curious why we choose what we write on.

I do like a well written poem about wars, etc. Dark poetry can be quite good. "Dulce et Decorum est" about WW I is one of my all time favorites from literature class.

Agnes, love this blog. I cringe when I see political or war themed contests. I find them SO difficult to write poetically about. I believe they work better for free verse and even then, since free verse is not my bag, they would still be hard for me to write about. Maybe it's because of the poetry I grew up with, but I loved Sara Teasdale as a young woman, and I love trying to emulate her style of romantic poetry. It seems to come the most naturally to me. I also love humorous writing, parodies, limericks, etc. I would rather read about your sparrow than a serious didactic type topic. For me, it's about the imagery. Message also important but only if it's either figurative or humorous.

Andrea, I disagree about them working better for free verse. I have written a good one just now and it's not free verse.

Agnes, I exactly see your point. But for me, I just want to understand or really KNOW the issue. I have written a few poems on serious topic when I just put myself in the place of someone who would be close to the situation. Movies inspire me a lot too if I am ever to write this kind of poetry. They allow us to feel like a person would feel in the middle of war or starvation, etc. Books too, but I rarely read novels any more.

I thought about it some more, and I think, with the very serious topics, I am probably afraid of not doing them justice, of writing something trivial, trite, non-authentic. Which somehow seems worse on a topic like that- especially for somebody who has not lived the experience and earned the "right". If that makes any sense.
Date: 5/17/2017 10:53:00 PM
Except from the collaborations I do, my own poetry is very personal. I don't think I shy away from anything I experience. Politics I leave out. Sometimes my poems are angry, sometimes sad and a few funny poems. I have a few preferred themes: dance and (mental) illness. Most probably because that occupies my mind right now. Hopefully I will move on to other subjects later on :)

Yes, all of the below and quite sure, all of the above (as I begin to repost my poems you will see. But the short answer is that nothing is wrong and therefore nothing is "preferred" when it comes to poetry except what comes from your heart because the analogies, metaphors, et.al--speak of all reality if we look carefully, the sparrow being driven from its nest or its eggs being eaten by another bird ... there is beauty and sadness in all aspects of nature and every corner of life and when we look up from darkness we need that smile and hope anyway or we would wallow in despair.

I am drawn to write about my past & Christianity. The tone is usually sober, but I do have one comical poem. I am uncertain as to the why of my patterns. I never thought about it before reading your blog. I will have to take some time to see if I can find the why. Concerning the moral questions you asked. I would say nothing is trivial. Don’t worry about the genocide, keep writing about the sparrows because others will write about the genocide. So concerning the question about writing about cake to me is not the issue. The issue I see, should money be spent on the cake at all, or a donation?
