A fleeting hi.
I get bouts of hmmm what do you call that? Bingeing? on certain musicians, songs and can go through these phases and can just listen to them over and over...The two that I'm highlighting here, just calm and soothe me.
Just want to share for my own weird reasons...but yep, no worries even if I want to go on and on, I won't babble on too much why I like these songs and all (but if incline to, please feel free to share your thoughts, thank you)
These days, I'm back to listening to Benjamin Francis Leftwich and one of his songs in his new album (his 2nd album came out last August 19th) that just stuck with me is Tilikum . Maybe just me but geez, that chorus just gripped me. Then blend it in with the other verses just *sighing*. For me though, knowing what goes behind the song (or perhaps sometimes even in poetry that I read--if I am privileged enough to find out or deduce) truly adds another dimension to my absorption & appreciation of the piece.
Anyhoot, his other songs I really also enjoy and can get immersed in them for hours. I hope more people can know of him and appreciate his music more. Who knows, maybe next time I might blog on his other songs. Maybe.
I can't choose a line that I like best, but will highlight this one just because I found it unique
"Be my time bomb lover, tonight"
"Tilikum"
I wonder what you're thinking
Staring through the rain
Going through our baby names
Your husband thinks you're sleeping
At a motorway hotel
He doesn't know tonight you're flying out of hell
Be my rose, growing in the cold
Be my light in the window at home
Be my sun, rising in the sky
Be my time bomb lover, tonight
You're turning on your phone now
Your hands begin to shake
I'm just across the harbour bridge you say
I flew out here to tell you
I couldn't hold your pain then
Day by day I waited for your heart to mend
Be my rose, growing in the cold
Be my light in the window at home
Be my sun, rising in the sky
Be my time bomb lover, tonight
Be my rose, growing in the cold
Be my light in the window at home
Be my sun, rising in the sky
Be my time bomb lover, tonight?

"...and once I knew, I was Not magnificent"
Another song that just haunts me these days is already several years old-- some might be familiar with it-- Holocene by Bon Iver. I think not everyone would appreciate their style-- some might not enjoy it. They'll also release an album soon (one of their new songs, 22 (OVER S∞∞N) made me think as well) .
Admittedly, I had a hard time understanding some of the lyrics at first but the melodies gripped me and Justin Vernon's lyrics are fascinating for me. Grows on me...This is also a song that has deep, personal meanings when he wrote it but for me is actually also transcendental and one can relate to it on different levels. Once again, the chorus here just stays with me and the subtle changes in the words there (strayed--hulled-- high) well yeah, for me, I think they also make a difference.Such a beauiftul video this one has, btw.
"Holocene"
"Someway, baby, it's part of me, apart from me."
You're laying waste to Halloween
You fncked it friend,
It's on its head,
It struck the street
You're in Milwaukee, off your feet
... and at once I knew I was not magnificent
Strayed above the highway aisle
(Jagged vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles
3rd and Lake it burnt away, the hallway
Was where we learned to celebrate
Automatic bought the years you'd talk for me
That night you played me 'Lip Parade'
Not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree
Saying nothing, that's enough for me
... and at once I knew I was not magnificent
Hulled far from the highway aisle
(Jagged, vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles
Christmas night,
It clutched the light,
The hallow bright
Above my brother,
I and tangled spines
We smoked the screen to make
It what it was to be
Now to know it in my memory:
... and at once I knew I was not magnificent
High above the highway aisle
(Jagged vacance, thick with ice)
I could see for miles, miles, miles
