Notes About The Poem
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1940, David Gates was a very musically inclined individual who played several instruments and wrote many songs made popular by singers of the 60's. He later moved to LA and it was after '69 when he formed the group Bread that he became famous for not only writing songs but for singing them. Other hits of his group not mentioned in my poem include "It Don't Matter To Me," "Diary" and "Aubrey." He also wrote the song made famous by the movie of the same title: "The Goodbye Girl."
He is probably not my very favorite songwriter. I have too many to ever narrow it down to just one. But I was impressed to write of him since he was one whose music made me dreamy!
The Soft Songs Sung By Bread
I liked the soft songs sung by Bread,
a group whose lyrics filled my head,
for each day from my radio
I’d hear their music sweetly flow.
At night, relaxing on my bed,
I liked the soft songs sung by Bread.
I’d sing along while listening to
songs like “If” and “Make It With You.”
To “Baby I’m a Want You” I
would think of one I loved and sigh.
When by romance my heart was led,
I liked the soft songs sung by Bread.
Who wrote those lovely lyrics sung?
I didn’t care, for I was young
with many years before me spread.
I liked the soft songs sung by Bread!
