Forty Today

Visited you today as the sun set in the horizon… the orange tinged carnations were a perfect complement for the skies and for you… orange and blue always remind me of you the winds softly blew and I just sat there staring at the grass, well more at your name really… hardly believing what I am looking at, that it’s been seven years of missing you, of just putting that reality at the back of my mind… But there are days, such as today which make me confront that reality— I see your smile, remember your laughter celebrate your spirit and your love Tears, I tell you I have the most stubborn tears maybe because they make it so real for me? I look around me and look for that sign Nope, not there… I say a prayer and speak to you thankful for the life shared I kiss the date that you were born and walk away my reflection on the car window misty One last look around, and then I see it… a cat, as we drive away… Skies now streaked purple and pink **My brother would have been 40 today, May 6…

What an exceptionally beautiful poem Nikko! I was looking for one of your poems from your heart and not for a contest and I found it:) Soooo much better written from tears instead of ink, don't you agree? This one goes to my favorites:) And I don't even like free verse:)

Nikko. The cat was the sign? Do you really think it's your brother? I just love this, and the skies streaked purple and pink. Wow, did this happen for you and the very day this year?? This is absolutely wonderful and I can't believe I missed it the other day. A Fave.

You see, there WAS A SIGN! A kitty! You drove some intense emotions into the audience in this honoring piece. The love of brother and sister is beautiful-especially when reflecting of childhood days. Your words are so direct and place a seat for the readers right beside you at your brother's grave site.....you are soooo talented! The more emotional you are, the better your poetry! This is going in to my favs along with other greats-honored u shared your heart here. Gwendolen
