I loved what Joe said down at the bottom. I have re-examined my poetry a few times when told it was not being interpreted as I expected and I admire people who are willing to listen to advice, particularly in regards to how something "sounds" to others. I've met a few at Soup who seem to take offense if I point something out to them. But others are very agreeable and that makes it so nice, to have this kind of interaction with others, of learning from each other. LUv, Andrea

Since I am from the South and we speak differently, I looked up every word to see which ones had accents and where that is on the first one that I wrote..I also found that if one used a short meter one can have extra at the end so some authority said that was correct...Sara

You know what else GOT me, I can MAKE anything sound anyway I want LOL, doesn't mean I'm not forcing it, AND I think what Carolyn & Joe and in the past ME are speaking of is the word Charlie used "inflection?" ALSO BIG BIG point here [Andie teached me this point!] You can't just go even by the dictionarys noted STRESS because the words are affected? effected?? by the words around them LOL

"Chattanooga" would present the same problems as "Tallahassee." Where do you put the strongest emphasis? I put it on the "noo," but others may stress the "Chat." Just regional pronunciation differences. I try to remember that when judging rhymes as well. People who were not born in the US are given some leeway in their pronunciations.

I concur with Joe that the meter in which we read our own work often differs from the meter in which someone else reads it. When I first joined public broadcasting in Tallahasssee, someone called the station complaining that I put more stress on the "has" than the "Tal" in the word Tallahassee. My boss told me to keep pronouncing it just the way I had been. She was born in Rhode Island and I in New Jersey. She had the same emphasis on the syllables that I had. I think this is why it's difficult for people to write in a prescribed meter, but it's always fun to try. As for the adult content in the limericks for your contest, I have read many and didn't see any I thought were offensive. Love, Carolyn

The meter in our head is not always the meter that is read. But, since we can't be there explaining to everyone how to read our poetry, it is important to have people tell us how it is being read. Some of us, the individual typing this comment included (i.e.: me), need to get over our pride of authorship and listen to what the reader is telling us. For those who like to hide behind, "Well, I write only for me", I must ask, "Then why post it here?" Just my two cents worth. Thanks for helping me learn, Deb, as slow as I may be to do so. Joe
