Pretty Please - haibun contest UPDATE

Blog Posted:8/7/2017 7:41:00 PM

The prose in my haibun contest has been excellent! PLEASE make sure

1. you have included at least 1 poems/haiku'>haiku

2. that what you have presented as a haiku IS a haiku

Please DO check with me, Andrea, or Chris A. to help you with your haiku. It is NOT that you are writing unacceptable verse; it is that what most of you are labeling a haiku is NOT a haiku.

BTW, congrats on the new book.

Anyway, I visited your blog. I haven't visited PS blogs in weeks. I love the haibun form. It's a way for me to merge the subjective with the objective, something that I enjoy doing and generally strive to do. Subjective prose mixed with objective haiku can have a strong effect. I find that if a writer uses (too much) subjectivity in both the prose and haiku, the haibun can easily fall flat if not done in certain, highly thought-out ways.

as you say haiku is complex & meant to be so - I am only asking for a baby step - basic, common knowledge guidelines such as two lines that are grammatically and conceptually linked, that play off a third

Hullo Debbie. How's it going? Haiku is a personal journey for me. Along the way, a bunch of us sort of meandered through a lot of info and lessons, and became like sounding boards in a 'room' for us to learn and grow in. Take 20 of the more elite haiku practitioners and/or groups/societies, and wade through their lessons, opinions, dissertations, etc., and there isn't a consensus across the board about what haiku is and isn't. Contemporary English haiku is usually a hybrid...not always exactly a cross between hokku/transitional period haiku and senryu, as senryu was meant to be more sarcastic and lighthearted, moreso focusing on human foibles, and it doesn't need juxtaposition and cuts. Nutshell senryu 101 definition according to HSA and UNIV of Tokyo: "A senryu is a poem, structurally similar to haiku, that highlights the foibles of human nature, usually in a humorous or satiric way. A senryu may or may not contain a season word or a grammatical break. Some Japanese senryu seem more like aphorisms, and some modern senryu in both Japanese and English avoid humor, becoming more like serious short poems in haiku form. There are also "borderline haiku/senryu", which may seem like one or the other, depending on how the reader interprets them. Many so-called "haiku" in English are really senryu. Others, such as "Spam-ku" and "headline haiku", seem like recent additions to an old Japanese category, zappai, miscellaneous amusements in doggerel verse (usually written in 5-7-5) with little or no literary value. Some call the products of these recent fads "pseudohaiku" to make clear that they are not haiku at all."

Yeah, Andrea, the topic doesn't have easy answers. Contemporary haiku can be quite the hybrid at the best of times.

Yes, Chris, this is what I was getting at with my comment below, the fact that haiku are often borderline senryu. Of course, I love juxtaposition and it's not easy to do!

As for help, sure, but, I may lead people down the garden path as I'm on my own journey. And, 1/2 the new Soup doesn't know who I am (which has its benefits :D).

I was simply adding that senryu doesn't need a cut. Yeah, you're asking for haiku that follow basic, common knowledge guidelines such as two lines that are grammatically and conceptually linked, that play off a third line (juxt/aha). Easy-peasy, right.

I want to feel the writer understands subjective/prose & objective/haibun [using the senses to SHOW feelings] as it CAN be illustrated in a haibun. Just if you would help who ever asks do this?

Chris I asked that the writers refer to Grace Guts haiku checklist. Though I agree with much that you say above - I want two parts, 2 lines connected grammatically & conceptually & a third line which brings surprise & a new understanding. I like a season word BUT - no season word is fine too.
Date: 8/8/2017 5:01:00 PM
Awww, Andy, you are completely misunderstanding me, I was siting you & Chris because I KNOW you understand what I want & CAN write haiku. No I do not want a senryu in the haibun though. I want prose which is subjective & a haiku which is OBJECTIVE - however I do think it is possible to write a haiku about a person.

that was an example. Actually the phrase is heavy heart, which I know because I had it. So I guess I can't use heavy heart even though I knew it to be so? That is my confusion with this form. I have another way to go but can't get it to stick to the confines of even 5/7/5

if you say someone has a sad face you are telling not showing & yes, making a subjective observation - you are not showing us anything - why did you think they looked sad? show us & let us decide what the emotion is ourselves- how seeing it makes us feel -

5/7/5 can be nice (on rare occasions), usually when it wasn't planned/forced into the full count. Operative word is "can" lol.

Also I do not like 5/7/5 but mostly I end up almost with that many syllables despite my best efforts.

Debs, what I meant is that some people think haiku only involves pretty scenery and seasonal things. And ones about people and their reactions is senryu. Mine are not focused on scenery but I feel they are mostly objective. Are phrases like "sad face" considered objective or subjective to you?

Also, I know you & Chris are very helpful to all on the site.

I also do not know why you are specifically naming me and Chris A. here. I think both he and I are able give it our best shot (admittedly I do not always write true Ku, but when I seriously put my mind to it, I feel I can do it).

Deb, I have not even posted anything yet for you. Did you think I had? I actually had written something but lost half of it and now need to start over. Anyway, my haiku are more like senryu. If that is unacceptable , let me know. I feel that when writing a haibun that deals with emotions (not to the scenery of one's trip), a senyru is just as fitting as a haiku, and if there is a rule against that in your opinion, I guess I cannot fare well in your contest! In my opinion, what I have thus far written is proper haiku (senryu).

Hi Catie, I don't mind a 5/7/5 but it is not a requirement for me, under 17 syllables will do Cate & do print out the haiku checklist from Grace guts.

Hi Deb, I am wondering... are you looking for traditional haiku, or are you accepting modern haiku, which, to me, resembles senryu? Love and hugs, Catie :)
