Hi Everyone,

Just a short note to let you know that if you CENTER your writing when the judge goes to rate you in the final round WE can not see the whole piece of writing. Please do NOT center.

A Haibun MUST include at least 1 haiku - to avoid confusion I have shown you what I MEAN by a haiku & given you a link to a very useable page by a well known & internationally well-published haiku writer.

*not a tradition haiku because it is subjective it is my judgement you are told to see the vine strangling the maple something a person would do, further you are told my my imagining that the vine is seeking revenge - so this is more Free Verse than haiku

a bittersweet vine
strangles the dormant maple
ribbon of revenge

* haiku - objective, factual with a season, with 2 parts and implied metaphor

a bittersweet vine
twines about the maple tree --
swollen knuckles ache

I am here, I see the vine, I show you the vine, I see my hand at the same time, now you SEE the relationship, you FEEL, I don't tell you what to feel. The change occurs in where my eyes have fallen first up & out and then down to my hands

One point that sometimes has been raised with me by soupmail after publishing on the winners link(especially in regard to limited places premieres) is "you did not like my poem" .When in reality, as Wayne says below, the poets are in competition with their peer poets.The sponsor makes a judgement and places the ten he/she prefers (likes) out of those presented in that contest.

It's very simple people, just edit your poem so it is not centered, personally, I don't like centered poems even if I can read them (not that anyone would care but...) Do what the judge asks, As far as timing goes relative to judging results, get a freaking grip and chill out because a quality judge needs quality time and those that don't give 20 firsts have to actually "judge", and that is work. Perhaps if you seldom win it means your poetry needs help so don't blame the judge, FIND HELP! There is perhaps no judge that is more fair or qualified than Debbie----JUST DO IT!

Wayne, people have lives outside of the soup and there are a few, like Debbie and Cyndi that are professional writers and Debbie is on the editorial staff of at least one publication. This site is lucky that they take their valuable time at all to host a "contest" here but they do so to share some knowledge. They need no assistance. They need our thanks for their contribution and perhaps some respect. If someone's life hangs on the results of a contest within 2 weeks, perhaps they should reevaluate their existence. I removed my poems when I was in 6th place all time. Life has more important pursuits.

yes, Brian, I wrote that a long time ago, I don't care what you use to show the a kireji, or cutting word : , dash etc but I preferr you use something

The caesura can also be indicated by an ellipsis or a dash as you show in your example.( Love the haibun form in all its various permutations ,as it combines two poetic skills and is therefore a very demanding form.)

If you centre and enter my contests AND you poem makes the winner round,the risk you run is that it may affect the placing if I am unable to read it in its fulness compared to the others in the winners ring.This has happened a few times in recent contests.But of course it is entirely your choice how you present your poetry here on PS contests.

Hey, you guys POKE - I do judge my contests on time. Don't throw out the baby [me] with the bathwater ;). PS publishers do not want centered poems maybe it's best to get in the habit of not doing it unless it's for emphasis [ex: the climax of the verse]

You, as the judge, only have to flick back to the second round to see the centred poems.

Lol. Sounds like ur expecting judges to be an electronic light speed automated robot.... Glad I'm not addicted to this instantaneous internet life of some... I'd rather my poems to be judged thought about nurtured and treated like they're organic...as long as it takes. I don't want fries with that.
