TOO MANY ARE CHANGING USERNAMES?

pardon my curiosity but i have been seeing a lot of poets changing their usernames... what could be the reason behind this?.. can you soupers shed light on this--- is it just a fancy, a need to be anonymous?

somehow, these new monickers prevent me from identifying the many friends i know here...would love to hear from you, especially those who in a way changed names, with due respect...

in my years of stay on TPS, i have not altered my username..maybe i should, hmmm...

nette, I was thinking of changing my username to 'The masked fishmonger' or 'The Haberdasher of evil', but on checking my reflection in the bathroom mirror, decided there was no point. What ya see is what ya get..... (with hugs) Viv x

Hi there Nette, well working in computers, and security, I dont get it, if you will be attacked, it will happen with a real name of different name. I think some people get a little paranoid, this is no different than real life, and in real life, you would take time to know someone, you might say hello my name is Arthur, but you wouldn't give them your credit card number! This made me think to do a blog, on explaining what to do, if one is truly attacked, I myself can say this, I have met so many wonderful people here, there is no perfect "place" but I can say this has to be the best run site overall I have ever used, and I have used many. Kudos to Soup and all the great people here.

I write under my real name. I see no reason why I shouldn't. I too have noticed people changing their names/nom de plumes, but I do not give it much importance; they must have reasons to do so. Others ( a minority, I hope) have done so after being caught out plagiarizing other members' works. Instead of retreating gracefully they come back in disguise.

geez....what with the Vikings losing terribly to San Fran last nite.....winter approaching and luckily didn't slide-out on ice last year and crash my old Taurus, seems i'm due.....now, this fun, safe place is filled with demons & stalkers.....i wonder, do ya wake up in the morning and say to yourself "what a beautiful day to be alive, it would sure be enjoyable to destroy someone elses"

All that's missing from my name is my middle name and it's Andrew. I can understand why people change their name. Reading below are some examples. Me, I'll never change mine, and if people want to attack or harass me, that's their choice, but I'll bite back, harder :-) Cool blog Nette, and we're all here to simply write and share. If people find this so hard to do, maybe they should spread their wings and fly away to somewhere that's more suitable for them. Blessed week to all on the Soup, James :) :)

i.ve always used my real name nette, yet was once attack, for using the name of an animal, suggesting i must be one too,,don't know, if they disliked animals or just me....i'm with craig on this..this is my real name,,oh plus Joseph in the middle also.

Hi there! I had considered changing my user name so that my poems on this site would fall under a pseudonym. Now that I am trying to get published in literary journals (I've now had a second published) I was concerned that editors would google me and find my "finger painting poems." I really thought about it. Instead, I erased over 900 poems and revised many of my remaining poems. Now, I feel they show the growth of a poet, without me feeling overly red-faced. Really, trying to get published is like trying to get hired and all posted poems are a reflection of your style, your voice... like a resume or a portfolio. I'm glad I kept my name and put in the hours to "clean house" xoxox

right, cyn, a poem of mine was published in an online magazine with a semblance of my real name a few years back... i got a bit confident and sent a piece here on soup carrying my username...awhh, failed!..yup, time to delete works, use a pseudonym, or bust!

Every art form builds a portfolio. Here is an example of a poet/writers portfolio: www.kathyfriedman.ca/#!publications/cwrg. An editor types in Kathy Friedman/poet, that is what they get. An editor types in Cyndi MacMillan, they get my poetry on Soup. The same editor will look at HER work and MY work. AWK!!!

Well, even if someone applies at McDonald's, the interviewer will google the name of the interviewee. They see a poem about what really goes in a chicken mcnugget? Chances are no second interview. :)

My FB account was recently hacked, but not in the way I imagined. They simply copied my info and made a new account pretending to be me and trying to get my friends to join this new account. anybody's account can be copied this way, the way I understand it. They are being malicious and wanting to give viruses to your friends. That's all I can figure out. Nothing is completely safe any more. I will never alter my name. Maybe I should, but I always stick to the status quo(I really do need to change my avatar though. Gotta get my nephew here to help me again!)

Hi nette, good blog, I have changed my user name often during the years I have been here, but I have been Broken Wings for quite some time now, I find it sort of suits me and I like it, so it will stay. Most people who have been here any length of time know my real name. I truly did want to write under my own name, but I was hacked a few years ago , so I learned my lesson to never use my own name on anything on line, sadly my real name is on facebook, it will not let me change that, but I have no information about myself of importance and really only pics of the cats, lol, yes I notice many change their user names, but I don't have trouble identifying them from their poetry ~~

i can't for the life of me imagine you being hacked, BW... i now understand why people choose to revise their usernames...cyberspace is not safe; there are no laws governing it... great lesson learned... thanks for this relevant input... we have been warned by you!

I have noticed the same Nette. It is a shame if they are doing it because they are being harassed. I probably have missed many of their poems with the new names..I won't change mine.

Yes,I know of friends changing their name, some tell me when they do ,and others I recognize from their profile picture. There was a time I was going to add my nee surname but seemed too long. Guess some of us feel the need to remain private.Maybe if one changes his/her name it shouldnt keep leading to that person cuz he /she might have a reason to do so. Re friends who change their username oftenly, yep they do confuse me at times especially if they forget to say. Do tell me if you change yours : )

All Social Site administrators have a duty to protect. I'd imagine harassing and stalking anybody, let alone a famil would flag on any Social Site, somethings wrong. Such has to be stamped out, failing that the authorities could easily become involved.

On a site which I joined in the past, a friend altered her name because she was being blocked by and getting unfriendly private messages from three "older' members. Wish to hear from others, Nette.

I was wondering about this too. I usually follow some poets regularly here, but they don't seem to be around any more. How can they be tracked? I hope you don't change yours. Just my thoughts.

Franco, If you had made them a favorite poet of yours you can look on that list or if you had favored any of their poems the name change will be on the poem in that list.
