I received a soup mail from someone I never heard of saying they had read my profile and were impressed. Can just any old body get into my profile? They left an email address, but I am not going to reply.

I just block those type of soup mail. First I click on their name and if they haven’t posted any poems they are usually fake.

Some are spam, some are not - I've received both, (including one a couple of days ago from the head of faculty at U of Arkansas who is putting one of my poems to music for the Schola Cantorum Choir, and one a while ago from a prof at Bilkent U, Ankara, who used a poem of mine to teach a whole course around), but I just google them and check their background before I reply - you can usually check out the honest folks quite quickly. You can make some very valuable connections that way, and I've had a number, so I would say don't dismiss them too quickly, just research them a bit, (and their motives are usually apparent).
