It Was On a Kansas Farm

It was on a Kansas farm I saw the beauty and the charm as I sat gazing out across the hills Not a car or man in sight just a blue and cloudless sky and the smell of barley wafting from the mills A rabbit scurried fast and a meadowlark flew past and I could hear the quiet ripple of a stream As the sun set miles away I had hoped to keep this day as I likened this adventure to a dream As I lie upon the grass with no rush to hurry back to the city with its bustle in the street I closed my eyes awhile and in classic country style I held a blade of wheat between my teeth The ‘nothingness’ was there yet it displayed a certain air and the splendor of the tall grass was pristine It was on a Kansas farm that I found this scene of charm and my heart rejoiced in all that was serene.

I really like this poem! I am a die hard rhymer myself so always read them first although I have been moved by a few free verse type poems. I was raised in Wichita, but my uncle Ben had 5 acres outside a very small town called Oak Valley. My mother moved us to Independence, KS when I was 12. Anyway, Great poem!!

Excellent work! This is a wonderfully written poem, and the image of a Kansas farm is painted perfectly. Ever wonder why Superman comes from a Kansas wheat farm?

Thank you for the visit Thomas and I think Superman must have known the beauty of Kansas first hand ;p

I have found a new favorite poet in you. A kindred rhyming spirit, which is becoming increasingly harder to find. Beautifully serene work Gayle!

If I'm being honest Gayle, I'm glad that you automatically revert to rhyme. I have developed somewhat of a disdain for most free verse. It seems to be the only form that is accepted any more. Like you, I seem to only think in rhyme. "Old school" I guess. Keep the rhyme alive!!

Thank you so much Keith. I try to do 'free verse' but it never comes out that way. In the end I end up automatically rhyming ;D

Gayle, A beautiful and most tranquil rhyme. Your words certainly bring the images home to the reader. Excellent Work!! And, Congratulations on your poem here making the Best New Poems list!! BTW, although I currently live now here in Europe (Germany), I originally come from Wichita, Kansas. A very small world indeed. Best Easter Wishes, Gary

I served in the U.S. Army in Berlin as a Commander near the end of the Cold War, and had a later Defense Department Civilian career in Stuttgart at the U.S. European Command (retiring in 2014). And, most importantly, my wife is German. (I'm still a mid-westerner at heart though!!) Cheers, Gary
