Poetry has been my passion since my retirement from an accountancy based career a dozen years ago. I currently live in South Africa and this rainbow nation has inspired many of my poems. I also have British nationality and embrace their grammar and spelling, but I read widely and am not fazed by strict grammar rules: A pavement/sidewalk; glasses/eyeglasses; judgement/judgment, et cetera; they are one and the same to me when I read poetry. To date, I have self-published a number of books, including the poetry anthology by international poets, © Time, 2014 ISBN 978-0-620-60578-6, and have been cited in many international publications, both poetry journals, as well as in scholarly handbooks. Some of my short stories have been published in international electronic publications, and one of my novellas had been short-listed for an Afrikaans SA publication.

I serve on the Board of Advisers, of Taleemi Baithak. (See my blog, Words of Wisdom, 29 September 2023.)

I have a number of poetic forms to my credit, notably, Suzette Prime (listed here on PoetrySoup), as well as Suzette sonnet.

My most recent books which include examples of my poetry as well as notes regarding poetry - available directly from me:

  1. © The Eutony of Words, 2018 ISBN 978-0-6399382-0-2
  2. © Docendo discimus, 2021 (Revised 2023) ISBN 978-0-620-95432-7
  3. © Flight of Thoughts, 2023 ISBN 978-0-6397-8880-7
  4. © Downtown - Poetic Devices, 2023 ISBN 978-0-7961-1968-1
  5.  © Rocking Poetry, 2033 ISBN 978-0-7961-2824-9

I am pleased to be part of this vibrant poetry community.

When reading poetry we do not, as a rule, concentrate on the design that went into it, but are first and foremost made aware of our own reactions to it. Often a poem would resonate with a reader during different periods in his lifetime and take on new significance with each new reading. Poetry is the comfort food of our youth which nourishes our memories. In our more mature years, it might be a source of reflection.

What does it all mean? If the meaning of a poem is too readily found, it is not poetry.  Keeping the content simple enough to reach a larger audience of all ages, might be the answer. When writing poetry, we have a plethora of poetic devices at our disposal and only need to call on our muse to pen an outstanding poem. But can it be as simple as all that?

What to write about often poses a problem as everything seems to have been said before and might come across as yet another cliché. Even memes are rip-offs of one another. To be able to express oneself in original terms might seem like a daunting task. However, the use of unusual words or words that are no longer fashionable or archaic might make or break a poem.

Why write a long, narrative poem* when keeping it short and sweet† might seem to be the easy way out? Or is it? The snowflakes aside, not all topics are suitable to be the subject of a poem; not in the mainstream where a poet might meet with some resistance. Know your audience. Which poetic form to choose to suit the topic, might leave one scratching one’s head. The correct execution of a particular poetic form, however, does not guarantee its success. It needs soul!

In the following tanka I did exactly that, honouring the design format, but all the tea in China would not have saved this abomination of a ‘poem’. Only the stout of heart will Google search the background to this disturbing event on Gough Island in the South Atlantic.

Over-thinking a poem kills it dead in its tracks. What do YOU think makes for a better than average poem?

Have a great weekend.

Happy quills!

Suzette

Your words resonated with me, Suzette. The form one chooses does make a difference. The choices I make depend upon my intent as well as my intended audience....truly not a simple matter. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and expertise.

Interesting story behind your poem, Suzette Each reader interacts with a poem according to their own life experience. Perhaps you have to live awhile to appreciate good poetry or understand it. I also learned  this from an English professor about writing in Rhymes. The mind becomes focused on finding the rhymes which tricks the analytic mind into allowing the intuitive mind to come forth. I definitely agree the form you choose affects the outcome of a poem.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience with us, SuZ. Your English professor has a point (I never thought of it in those terms).

Suzette, I am very presentation aware so the design is important to me. It must be inviting, love creative layouts. Then, in reading the poem the words should hold my attention, grasp my emotions, inspire me, I dislike sloppy poems, just my opinion, hugs Constance

I could not have put it better, Constance. When a poet has taken their time over the presentation, be it stylistic or thought-provoking, it shines through and I tend to savour the offering like a gourmet dish. :)

Well first of all I absolutely disagree that if the meaning is easy to discern then it's not poetry. It's poetry, not koan. Of course, there is room for every style and format. Poetry should be eclectic, as are tastes

Good point, Tom. Tastes do differ. But does it not underline the oft called for "show, don't tell"? Your collaboration poem with Becca is the perfect example of what I consider to be a fine poem (others might differ).

Since I know it is a poem and not just a mixture of ideas, it is a creative poem. Sara K

Yes, a poem tends to set down thoughts in an organised fashion. Thank you for your input, Sara.
