Notes About The Poem

In a Pickle

being in a May-December relationship
could test the boundaries of patience
like the football socks under a teenager’s bed
it does not age well

these relationships have unique challenges
the rehashed stories of ‘the good old days’
smell of figments of their imagination
as it contradicts with history lessons taught

they harp on about ‘songs with words’
ones people could dance to
with their cheesy renditions of songs
accompanying conga lines of yesteryear

unlike today’s noisy club music
and the ability to twerk
will score you a Grammy Award
the mobility challenged can’t compete

they’ve bequeathed us an unhabitable world
where we all are now in a pickle
forming conga lines at border posts
as we try to dance out of harm’s way

What a profound and deeply meaningful poem that flows also with wisdom and truth and the ending especially made me think deep! Your use of the prompt here is very unique and different in an impressive way ofcourse and i love the picture you’ve used here too! I especially love the lines “ they harp on about ‘songs with words’ ones people could dance to with their cheesy renditions of songs accompanying conga lines of yesteryear” hits deep! Congratulations on your top placement! Well deserved dear Suzette

Lol Thriveni. I've written well in access of 1,000 poems and wear many hats, especially those written in my native tongue - I'm inclined to be more measured in my English language poems. Thank you for the well wishes:)

Like Andrea, I was drawn to the uniqueness of this gem. Don't delete if it doesn't contest-place, let the gem live to become an old, pickled gem. I like your write. Do you need the 'and' at the start of 'the ability to twerk? It threw me off, but I realize it could just be me. (just to share for no reason, I CANNOT twerk, CANNOT do it) ... CayCay

Mmmmm Thanks for the feedback, Cay. The 'and' follows on from the previous line and refers to the components of the Grammy Awards that is not all that it seems. :)

Very unique and clever take on the theme. I have no clue where to go with that prompt

To be honest, neither do I, hence this quick scribble. I do prefer some pointers from sponsors, otherwise I just pluck something out of the air, and it is a hit or miss affair. It is unusual for me to write for such a prompt, though. If an example poem is posted at a later date and my poem does not fit the brief, I will delete it - no Biggie, but I wouldn't write another one

I enjoyed reading your fun write. I want to go back to ‘the good old days’ and dance away this crazy life. Have a fun day as you write away..........
