Notes About The Poem

Layers of Life, by Suzette Richards – Image generated 10 January 2024.

Layers of Life

Walking through the door of my childhood home
brought back tsunami of wisdom overture.
Tastes and colours in décor change with culture;
varied pallet of history in lands roam’.

My children had turned out to be a challenge
as they had early on displayed my talent
for examining and questioning latent
defects papered over; now seeking balance.

We’d a small, intimate wedding reception.
The wallpaper in the lounge is instantly
recognisable (like kin related distantly),
from the photos. No inkling of deception.

My parents had asked this sweet sixteen to voice
her preference for bedroom to replace staid
pattern reminiscent of a fabric plaid.
But they had vetoed black and white Op Art choice.

The celebrations of the many milestones,
spanning the blessed years of three generations
firmly recorded in the decorations;
layers of peeling wallpaper to bare bones.

I aimed to recall each memory in reverse order as though the pealing wallpaper represented it.

Suzette, congratulations! Poem of the day is in the rhyme scheme abba or where the first- and fourth-lines rhyme, an enclosed rhyme. Beautifully penned fleeting yet profound impressions, last line an apt metaphor, in a bio setting. Enjoy!

Congratulations Suzette on this POTD. It reminded me of just driving by my former home of forty years which was emotionally devastating for me. The new owner had cut down the Japanese maple by the fish pond and removed all the pine tree barriers that had blocked the high speed rails. You are much braver then me to go inside.

Dear Suzette, many congratulations on your POTD recognition. Like the wallpaper, there’s so many layers here to this beautifully written poem. Perfect enclosed rhyme with wonderful flow. It’s such an engaging read as the reader fills part of all the years and memories that have past. ‘ Layers of peeling wallpaper to bare bones’ is so profound and an exceptional line in particular. Really enjoyed appreciating your talent here. Enjoy your celebratory day. Blessings to you :)
