*The black swan theory or theory of black swan events is a metaphor that describes an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect, and is often inappropriately rationalised after the fact with the benefit of hindsight. - Wikipedia

Silently they glide past, submerged feet not breaking surface of serene stream. Strident honk by life-mate— state protected King’s game. Some black swan events are* smoothed over by hindsight.

It's cool the way they can move without disturbing the surface - nice poem Suzette!

I don't know why we can't any more explain a line ON the actual poem page. I had no clue about this metaphor and I should have looked it up. Also I am curious about state protected king game. You aren't in England, are you? Anyway. What I really loved about your poem were the first four lines. Such great description of how they glide along and I loved the word Strident that you came up with for their sound. Congrats and thanks for the entry

I recalled a Sunday afternoon stroll on the river bank in Stratford upon Avon when it must have been mating season and the swans' calls were loud and not pleasant (strident). Swans are game birds (not water fowl, as far as I know). Because they mate for life, killing a bird will result in a hefty fine --- in the olden days they were protected by the King's Decree, punishable by death if you should kill one. Only the King was allowed to eat swans ... A bit of useless information :)

I thought that swans being Kings game is common knowledge. I move between UK and SA ...
