An Exercise in Poetic Camaraderie

Blog Posted:7/13/2021 7:13:00 AM

Some of you may know that I no longer participate in contests. However, in the spirit of poetic camaraderie, I'd like to offer everyone a chance to list THREE words that you associate with writing poetry. No one's list will be judged. It's just a friendly exercise that I think could be fun. Negative comments will be deleted.  I'll begin with the words...Reflective... Emotional... Imaginative

Jenna, thank you for this positive and collaborative endeavor... what a delight it was to read the answers of our fellow poets and your affirming and insightful responses. My three words are: enlightening, edifying, and euphonious.

Jo, your poetry always flows like a tranquil river. Poets who write to heal their wounds use poetry as a cathartic tonic, putting into words what our hearts are feeling. Thanks so much for joining in with us.

Hi Barbara. your word choices remind me of a lovely painting... a pastoral scene. To read the way poets would describe such a scene would be an interesting project. Thank you for your contribution.

Your choices are a theme set in which passion(either romantic or love of poetry)intertwines with the realities in life. A common 'wishful thinking' or fantasy foundation for poems. Thanks for your ideas.

Originality shows a poet's style and imagination. His/her use of vocabulary in proper context, whether fictional or reality, enhances their creative ability. Not sure why forgiveness is important to you in developing poetry. Perhaps you could go into a little depth of this choice? Thanks for adding your thoughts, Richard.

Good words, JCB. Often, I've heard lyrics or a line in a movie and was off on a tangent to write! Leaving a little intrigue and mystery allows the reader to use their imagination. Thank you for your thoughts.

No, Harry, you have not spoiled anything. In fact, I'm glad you opened up about wearing a mask, and I understand about being shy. Poetry gives us the courage to pen what we cannot verbally convey. Wishful thinking, and fantasies we have are set free in our poems. Thank you for returning to explain. It may help others to remove their mask; their veil and write more freely.

Jenna it's complicated, Being extremely shy, poetry was and to a degree still is my mask, as for wishful, imagination usually comes with wishful thinking. Hope i have not spoiled the blog Jenna, can delete if you want.

Surrender? Well … as I’ve said in different poems, ‘wherefrom came that exalted thought, that inspiration with it brought?’ Surrender of lower mind, of doership, enables us to connect with higher mind, with the universe.

The feelings that resonate within us have the need to surface on paper. Surrender? Would you care to explain your reason for choosing this one, Seeker?
Date: 7/13/2021 6:37:00 PM

Hmmm...I was thinking of the true meaning of creativity, Jenna. Compulsion, yes, I need to write, I am compelled to express my inner feelings on the page...not necessarily "what flows through the mind at the moment" but sometimes. Comfort. Yeah, I receive an inner comfort and contentment from writing, and I hope sometimes I bring comfort to others with what I write. Thanks.

Creativity...of course. Compulsion? The need to write what flows through the mind at the moment? Comfort? That's a tricky one. Do you write only what feels comforting to you. I think not, for I've read some of your 'out of the box' poems. Thanks for joining, Milt.
