To Pic or not To Pic that is the question

Blog Posted:2/21/2016 7:29:00 AM

Having a premium membership allows the poet to add text or photographs in the Author's Notes options.

The last couple of writes I had added photos and I noticed two perspective, one complimentary of the photos I had added and the other a comment saying the poem should speak for itself and photos are unneeded.

What I was wondering was....

Do you enjoy it when a poet adds photographs to her or her poem page?

I think we all have to remember that a lot of the poets here are sensitive that many are wounded some more than others. I wish I could hug them all. I am so sorry if I missed your name on my list below. I understand that some just want to help others to be even better poets. I totally believe they do it with love. Above all else this is one of the best sites for support by brothers and sisters. I like that. I don't believe any idea or concept should change that. People are more important than a perceived purity of art. I know everyone agrees on this point. There are no villains or bad people on this blog. Families fight sometimes that is normal. Group Hug. I Love You All, always, Armand.

Armand, what a lovely comment. I was DEEPLY missing Linda Marie today. These comments? It was like you brought her to soup with you... did you know her? Anyways, thank you so much. I was feeling so awful, down... storm hitting our region, BIG STORM. And your words brought sunshine. Hugs.

Mixed Media is a true and accepted form. I think Craig hit it on the nail. His art is rooted in the pure art form of poetry. Craig, Rueben, Cyndi are brilliant poets may the universe always shine on their work. Casarah is a brilliant photograper and a brilliant poet. I believe both keeping her arts separate as well as mixing her medias would be of great benefit to her. Jan, and Andrea are brilliant poets that I believe use pictures effectively. Eileen is a brilliant poet "pointe finale". Linda is a brilliant poet. John is a brilliant poet. I have not read every poet who commented here but I do love the people here. ...to be continued

Craig you are inspirational. I have learned so much from you. We should not be afraid of the word brilliant. A lot of your art is wow, wow, wow! As a theatre director I have a sincere love of writers Craig you should be proud of your work in my humble opinion nothing short of brilliant. Again thank you. You have been a great help to me. Lots of Love, armand.

Reuben I am sorry to disagree with you. I love your poetry. English is also my second language. I was born in Casablanca in the continent of Africa. Thank you so much for your kind comments of late. Lots of Love Armand.

Personally (for the most part) I find the photos a bit distracting. But it depends on the piece I suppose ... sometimes it can compliment it in some way. Haiku, hundreds of years ago, used to be accompanied with a painting ... called Haiga. Nowadays people don't do it as much, so I'm not sure .... I'm a words-only kind of person, but to each their own.

I am not sure if other soupers do this, but I use the "PIC" area to put up links, sometimes. If the poem is about a certain subject that some may not know about, then you can put up a link to a website about that topic. You can also use that area for notes or a glossary (even published poems make include a few notations/definitions.) You know what I'd like to see? If a poet writes their poem by hand and edits it with scribbles and notes in the margin... well, I'd love to see a snapshot of THAT in the picture area. I'm a romantic, I guess, and the idea of seeing all that hard work handwritten... all that very personal SCRIPT, it just fascinates me. I'd really love to see that. :)

Please do...I'm going to have a blog up. Ruben...a friend is leaving this site because...she is being cut down. I hope this is not a reference to you and the 20 pics thing. Ruben..if it isn't your style...stay away. Also....about coloring books....there you go demeaning again...Do you get some sort of thrilling to putting people down....especially when you see they have made a valid point? Why do you watch these classics to film??? WOW..talk about interpretation...Pride and Prejudice so much was...off the original text. I KNOW the classics...Don't WATCH..the movie...producers own interpretation...stick to the text. This may be far fetched....bit your coloring book comment was "below the belt" dear. Really...must you stoop that low? Later...dear. Yes...I'm brushing up on my sarcasm...it comes in handy around here.

There are hardback poetry volumes that are illustrated! Does it being online make it different? I respect those of differing views. Why can't we make a point without making the other feel ridiculous. This I don't understand. I love how you made your points, dear, so this isn't referencing you. Hugs

I'd love to see the Bronte manuscripts, Cyndi!!! Oh...that would be a thrill! Honestly!!! We are always encouraging poets to go with the "modern" way of writing though we emphasize that there still is a market for old school work...Wonder if the Bronte sisters were alive now...if they wouldn't perhaps go with "modern".....the flow of mixing and marrying art with words? Ofcourse, the words must paint pictures, but images also force thought. I've taught a class on argumentation....implicit....explicit....and there is a section on visual argumentation...which involves images AND text.

I'm sorry....I can mention the drama makers on my fingers...they have been banned and come back in different guises...again and again. That comment was not called for. I'm very very disappointed in you, Ruben. I really am....more than you can ever know. Your "friend" did this on another blog....cut below the belt. Many are complaining about this type of behavior though they aren't speaking up. I won't be silent to put downs. Drama or not....I won't. Hugs....dear.

No, dear....but superior attitudes....adult/child tonality is not.....constructive....psychologists say. Making those who do it seem juvenile....isn't uplifting. I'll be bold enough to say there is too much of that going on of late....elitists attitudes. It puts people off rather than make them want to dialogue. I knew this would happen here....I wasn't wrong. I'll keep posting my pics...after all, an hardback poetry volume might have lovely illustration, no?

Hey...Sweetie. This is why I've decided to keep a low down on the blogs. I don't like elitist attitudes. There is no right and wrong....no matter how belligerent we are about our opinions. The feature is there....those who want to use it are welcome to. Those who think it's a cardinal sin....don't have to. Its pretty simple. Like I said earlier....live and let live. Don't know why that's so hard on this site. Hugs.
Date: 2/21/2016 11:41:00 AM
Art is multifaceted. Words and images go so well together. I love looking through pics. I "collect" them. I'll download pics that move my heart, and sometimes when I'm down...I'll go through my file. I find extreme joy in finding just the right pic for my poem. It's one of the perks of being a PM. I will always join pics to my poems unless I really feel that the pic detracts from the message. That's me. I'm not changing. Live and let live. If poets really are unnerved by the pics and they know who posts them, they can stay away. There IS the copyright issue which Cyndi brought up. An argument could be made on those grounds, but I figure if it's on Google images...it's pretty much out there.

Other poetry websites do allow for various texts, backgrounds and photo additions, you would never go on another page and use other tools to enhance your words? Everything should be plain black text on plain white page?

I think they just add fun to the experience. There are some poems you simply cannot do it to. thinking or reflective poem might be strange ones to put a picture with. I just posted a vacation poem and put up pictures of fun vacation spots at the places I described. I think it works really well when your poetry is talking about things the reader has no inkling of. My vacay pictures were of places in the U.S unknown to many here. I posted pics of my childhood park to show its beauty because my description alone could not do it justice. I used owls to show owls in my story poem!I had not even heard of elf owl before researching it. Poems that are the inspiration of what we saw are best!

Only once or twice have I been inspired FIRST by a photo or painting to write. I DO like to include AN image with my posts. I'm thrilled when finding one that fits perfectly, the thoughts I was trying to convey with words. I became a Premium Member so I COULD add images...but never a fan of more than one.

I know there is a great feeling to a poem when there are pretty pictures to go with it to, when it compliments the poem. Thank you for your thoughts Lin.

I like the photos on a poem (sometimes) however, I've seen a few where the body is nothing but photos, and at the way, bottom is a poem. it might clash the poem a bit. Nice question... LINDA

Okay, (just) one time, I read a poem, after looking at the pictures. I was confused because I interpret the poem in a different way, the illustration of the pictures on the authours note (PIC) had nothing to do with the poem. Even if I read the poem, wrong nothing made the imagery connect
Date: 2/21/2016 7:43:00 AM
Carrie, using the picture as the theme or prompt for the poem would, I believe, put it in the Ekphrasis mode. It has been said that "a picture is worth a thousand words" yet we, as poets, attempt to "paint" a mental picture with the fewest "brush strokes" possible. Your poetry stands on its own.

Thank you for your response. The poem is the piece of art is a very good answer.
Date: 2/21/2016 7:42:00 AM
If the poem is Ekphastic, I enjoy it because the poem is a direct response to "that" piece of art. BUT otherwise, NO! & I was the biggest ever pic-abuser on soup. For a period of time, every poem I posted had accompanying art. Then, I realized, I was using the art as a crutch. A good poem should stand on its own weight. However, picture books for children ---obviously---are a good way to illustrate one's poems. Children enjoy looking at art in books if they do not know how to read, yet. Still, it all comes down to the choice of the writer. As long as the Photos were not also plagiarized and used with the photographers permission. A lot of art that is not public domain is posted here.

Thank you for your response. I like that you admit you did it at one point in time. There are reasons why a poet would add them and others why they wouldn't, I think you have very good points, thank you.
