Abandoned

Permanently resting upon steel tracks, a retired rail car passes the time, weathering away. Contents empty, it is a lonely shell, abandoned on an unused track in an overgrown pasture, unseen and forgotten. Tired after decades of service, it groans when the hard winds blow. Scampers of critters can be heard reverberating through the hollow. It moans in the defeatist melancholy mod that it has become. Dressed in the attire of spray painted graffiti, the rail car rust in the tears of depressed years. Beautiful sadness it has become... unable and unstable to ever ride again.

Wow! 1st, congrats on your win, and 2nd, I really related to this as I love trains and live less than a 100' from an old line which now is only used to carry the odd freight train (posted a poem, 'The Old Tracks' about the 'memories' it evokes in me). And your metaphor at the end-- can well relate to that as I ride the old tracks into my 70's...well, well done!

Cas, You write of one's soul once youthful and full of promise. The days were long in adventure and nights were made for romance. Surely this was God's dream when he made us. Then suddenly without warning or fanfare it was gone. I had be derailed! No engineer to bail me. No one who cared to hear my cry. Everyday, surrounded by the masses, yet terribly alone. Without love there's no purpose. Permanently derailed. Too far from love or even a wishing well. Oh, how I wish I could catch a train home!
