An Incomplete Love Story

Only heaven knows what I'm going through tonight,
there is nothing to say that would make this feel alright.
Aches inside where I hide the secrets, where I keep this,
seeping into my conscious, powerful thoughts of his kiss.
We fumbled through the first times, young lovers blind,
studies falling while we were on each others minds.
Handwritten notes promised we'll be together forever,
but separation lost the after to our happily ever.

I can still feel his arms around me that afternoon,
moving trucks came and they were leaving too soon.
We ached for each other as promises filled the empty,
"I'll be back for you baby, and I swear you'll marry me"
Teenage hopes, high school sweetheart dreams die,
left to face the loss of my best friend, all I did was cry.

Postage stamped proclamations eased the pain,
couldn't ease the drought with meager rain.
Too far the distance and distractions slowly came,
we found other companions but it was never the same.

Hours of agony turning in the years of silence,
with others we bonded family alliance.
I was there when you married her, wished it was me,
you confessed the same, we weren't meant to be.
One last kiss, a simple touch of lips, heart breaking
deprived of my destiny, I spend forever aching.

Only heaven knows what I am going through tonight,
Twenty years have passed, I'm still holding tight
to the pictures of the past when love was purity,
him and me, there is more to our destiny.

Just another chance, another touch, that feeling again,
I want to wear the ring on my finger from my best friend.

Your story is written so beautifully Cacarah! You hear of couples getting together after like 40 years and those feelings never changed. Congratulations on your wonderful first placement. : )

Such a well-written poem, Casarah, that presents a real dilemma that so many young couples endure, especially in college years, where for some, a deep love is born but can never grow to live on. Congratulations on your fine placement in the contest. Hugs, Sandra

Cas.. You're an artist with a pen in your hand. You write a story that wrings tears from the readers eyes. Your perfectly picked words so jointly fit into your descriptive tale, that every reader is in the very room watching the action up close. And dare I say, the reader is even in you.. feeling every emotional blow and weighted by their devastating toll. Your authentic verse left me weepy and exhausted!!
