Contest Thoughts

Blog Posted:6/8/2016 11:51:00 AM

I am asking for your opinions here as I want to explain mine, and if many agree then maybe it can be presented to tps... this is about contests and placements....

As we all know there is no general consensus about placements in contests, the premium contests verses the standard. Which gives the judges a choice.

With my ghost contest I placed 1-15 on the poems and the rest HM because there are poems that I didn't click to at the time, or I just connected with another, which didn't mean the rest were bad, wrong or maybe another day I would have liked them more.

My opinion is that every contest should list the participants for the whole community to see. The judge should be able to filter out the "fake" entries, but I think following a winners list should be all entries. That way someone who has written a poem , that has taken the time out to write for a prompt, should have the exposure and gratitude that comes with writing. Sometimes good poems fall from the lists and never get acknowledge.

Would that option be a praise or a slap in the face?

Also on the topic of contests, I think that before posting the judging of a contest a Host should have to or be able to comment on each write as to thank the participant, explain the judging or give commentary, and then when the contest is judge the comments would show up. Having the option to comment directly from the judging pages would be a nice feature.

Now these are just a couple of opinions. I really do value each and everyone who writes for my contest prompts. If these suggestions would fit into the way contests are run, please let tps know... they are just things that I would like to see as a contest host.

Thanks for reading my suggestions.

The sites about encouraging poets, the way you marked the last contest was really good hm a great way to give that encouragement. a na and no reason just means you move onto the next one non the wiser cheers stephen

It is tough because I see both sides to judging and I always want to encourage writers. I never want to offend anyone by misplacing or no placing a well dictated write.
Date: 6/8/2016 3:24:00 PM
I wonder then, if we can have a section for contests, and then a section for prompts where a host could post a picture, a song, a phrase then writers can write for the prompt and be featured, like a blog I guess but where a poet can link their poem in comments. Maybe something like that? because it seems like sometimes I just want to be nice and inspire writes and sometimes I want y'all to draw blood for a win, maybe two separate arenas for showcases?

Your paragraph starting "also on" would mean doing away with anonymity. We should guard that, not throw it away.

I do agree, I like how we have the anonymity on the contest. And I agree with the quality poems, sometimes I do get some contest writes that are just absurd that had nothing to do with the subject.

@ Usual Suspect - I decided to put the focus on anonymity. My other comment dealt with the quality of poems received - how we shouldn't be expected to comment on ones we don't like, thus risking falling foul of PS rules.

@ Casarah - PS wish us to keep anonymity, not get rid of it, which it would mean if commenting were allowed prior to judging.

I guess what I was trying to explain in that paragraph was a way to comment directly, or even write notes about a poem as you are in the judging process, I've noticed I've had to scribble on my notebook next to me the things I want to tell the author of a write, sometimes I forget so if there is a way to do it while in the judging process, it would be helpful, but I know not everyone would want that sort of thing.

I agree with posting all entries for the exposure opportunities, always have. If one only wish's to read the top 10 that's fine some would like to see the varied approach or form each poet brings to the challenge. As for critique, I think that should be a decision for each sponsor. I would enjoy, the opportunity to hear why my work got the placement it received, form, punctuation, off topic anticipated, date, didn't follow a rule? I agree with Teppo N/A is demoralizing and should be eliminated.

Thank you, I like your answer. NA could mean so many things and whether or not it fit the rules, or the judge just didn't like it. it does feel so impersonal. and as judges once the contest is posted we don't get to see who the NA's are to give advice or critique but we get to see who the placements and HMs are.

Well Ruben my thought is for the new writer who wrote his/her best effort and got an N/A with no explanation what was unacceptable. It may have been a forgotten date or rule missed. I am not demoralized Ruben rest assured, I have my perspective in order. There are many young and emerging writers not as callused as you or I, lol.

Okay thank you, that is really what I was curious about is that would people even read if there was an abundance of entries. I know I have looked at some winners lists and said heck I'm not going through all that. I would only want people to feel pride on their work not ripped off.
Date: 6/8/2016 2:39:00 PM
Sometimes I'd rather get an NA than an HM because then I can tell myself I never even entered that contest :P but an HM is out there flagging my failure .... just keeping it real lol Your idea is a good one Cas.. to give people exposure ... but to be honest, I don't read twenty HMs it is too time consuming. If there is first, second and third, forth and an HM, then I will read them all. But I can't read 35.
