Secret Stash

Blog Posted:4/8/2016 7:59:00 PM

When I first came to this site I would post half a dozen of poems a day, Now I've been posting one or two a week, but that doesn't mean I am not writing, I actually have been writing way more now than I did then. I'm putting together a collection to publish and I find myself creating a secret stash of poems. The hard part is I love the poems so much, I want to put them on here to be read and enjoyed and the self restraint is killing me, I really do enjoy the immediate gratification of knowing I wrote something well!

Now I am curious, does anyone else hold back? Do you have secret stashes of poetry and what keeps you from posting them, or do you post as it comes straight from brain to site?

:)

Hi Cas ,Firstly I wish you the best of luck 're your publishing. Any published souper makes me feel proud cuz He /She is one of us. 're poems ,when I first joined p.s I used to write my poems from heart to p.c ...but they lacked so much quality : ).I used to write much more as well.Nowadays I write less..Usually an idea pops out of nowhere. .I put it down in memo..then later at night or when time permits I work on it..'re published poems..There are some poems I had to delete from here to get them published. ..'re poems that I keep for myself...I have some of those too . I call them Scribbles On Papers : ).

Well, God willing, I too want to publish a book of poems (though not self-publish). Still, there are some which I wouldn't want everyone to read. Those are all stashed away, maybe for as long as I live.

It is great that you have a plan for the stashed away poems :) Keep writing ;)
Date: 4/9/2016 10:06:00 AM
Yes, Casarah; I have several poems that are on standby. I believe that posting one poem a day is more than enough if the intention is to have them read! Leaving a wider gap in between is also advisable. We have to bear in mind that commenting and replying is time consuming. There is no pleasure if one gets stressed out that way! Thus, the less I post the more time I have on my hands. ~ Wishing you every success with your book:)

I have well over 300 longer(perhaps better) poems in my private journal. I have pulled and posted a few dozen of them here over the years, but will keep most private as some have very personal references and admissions. THE GREAT Emily Dickinson's best work was published after her death from poems she kept private and unpublished. I think she did so knowing they'd be appreciated more after her passing. Best of success with your book my friend, I am sure it will be a hit.

wow, that is great, I have quite a few that no one will ever read, I do hope that if I was to pass away before I publish though that someone else would take the initiative to do so for me, I would be torn to think unpublished poems just become decomposition. best wishes my friend x

Yes, I have a few of my poems stashed up. Just because they are either childish or pessimistic. Also I don't want to reveal all of my works to everyone:)

Do you have plans for the ones that you don't post?
Date: 4/9/2016 4:23:00 AM
yep, i share your frustration in this respect! i've had to take poems down before due to entering the big comps, submitting to mags, etc. most journals and comps will not accept previously published poems, and they include internet self publication in that...and of course, if you are putting a collection together, you have no choice but to take them down and/or keep poems off the site...btw i would suggest about forty poems for your book, it depends on the length of the poems, but on average forty is about the right number - hope that helps, and good luck!

Hmmmm .... I'm working on publishing my funnies the working title is 'a poem away keeps the doctor away' so it's going to have 366 in (one for leap year lol) of course as I write 'poop poems' it could always be used as loo paper if there ever was a shortage lol:-) hugs Jan xx

Thanks!Once you take a poem down from this site, is it considered safe to use in competitions? Does it loose its trace off the internet?
Date: 4/8/2016 11:37:00 PM
I've got a few stashed away Cas but will have to pull many of my poems from soup for my book - but I do like to get the reaction on here to know I'm on the right track with my funnies. I to try to post only one a day unless there is a contest closing - I prefer to get reads and comments on my latest poem- just not my style to post 10 a day that few people read in fact I get put off seeing so many poems and I am sure I miss out on some great poems:-( hugs Jan xx

I have about 156 that I add to, they are momentary skeletons and finished fugues, as a contest appears n triggers me, I use one, then write three or four more, ..I look forward to seeing your finished project....

Well, it is free to do an ebook through amazon, I don't have any money to invest in publishing but I want to put out something that I can be proud of. I don't really know how to do it any other way

Physical, Casarah. Are you not doing yours that way? I don't have anything to do with Ebooks. It's just how I am. I need a book in my hands to read into the night!!!

Casarah, the lady that published my books preferred doing 40 pages, but in those 40 pages I sometimes got two to three poems on a page. That's just me. I like to fill up spaces. So I have one book that is only etheree, and that makes over a hundred of them in that one small book. Also they were illustrated with beautiful pictures painted for me by my friend. At least 20 pictures. In other books, mostly one or two poems per page. I see no reason you have to pull your poems off the site if you are self publishing! Even if you pull off a poem, I believe the trace of it lingers. Unless you change your title and perhaps the wording of your first line.

I am going to self publish, I have pulled off a lot of poems from this site to do so because I didn't know if I should leave them on or not. I am really anxious because I have some poems in my collection I am really proud of but...I just don't think it is ready to publish yet... :) So since you have already had a book, how many poems did yours include, I'm struggling on how many to put in mine?
Date: 4/8/2016 8:18:00 PM
Love this question, Casarah. I have lots of little poems from years ago. I simply hold back because I want all my poems to be read. If I post more than one a day, I feel they won't be read. I work hard commenting to others in hopes they will come to my poetry to read my stuff. That's what it's all about for me: BEING READ. People think I just want comments, but those are just tangible signs to me that the person probably read my word. Since I am always using contests to inspire me, I keep putting one a day for contests. Therefore, some of my old poems never get shown. Congrats on holding back, but are you self publishing? If I were self publishing, I would still post my poems.

Yeah I have noticed too that if I do post more than one in a day, then the other one falls off the radar. I do try to read whoever has commented on me first and then go through the new list, so many words and never enough time.
