Good Morning Soupers, my Dr. Seuss contest are all finished, and thank you all for participating.

This next one is easy, I want you to go to your poems and enter the highest viewed poem...

I did this one day, wondering what poem I wrote has gotten the most view...It was my poem Little Wishes, so I googled it and found it has been used other places too other than just this website, which I am very flattered, but I wouldn't have considered it my best poem, or one of my favorites...

Is your highest view poem your favorite? Have you seen where else it has gone, because there are times someone uses your poems and doesn't not personally contact you to do so, not to mention all the sister sites of poetry soup exposing your poetry..

It just blows my mind that this Little Wishes poem has over 5000 hits whereas the next highest is about 2000...I just find it fascinating...what do you think about your poetry exposure...of all the other sites that I write on...this one is really getting the best exposure.

I have not entered the contest Cas but its an interesting blog. My most viewed poem is 'Meet me half way' 5532 views. It is one of my fav scribbles too. I did realize that some people used some of my poems but there was always my copyright underneath. Maybe you should try pblish those poems which have many in journals.Poetry Quarterly have open submissions at the moment, and its free to enter. Your poetry is wonderful and am sure they'll find plenty to their taste. Another lyric poem which had plenty of views was put into a song in Nottingham and is now on a c.d, so I believe hits have affect.. Another is in the pipe-line , and this tnks to poetrysoup an the support of poets like you here

Thanks for a great contest - as a result of Faye's blog I found the 'winter' poem I had entered for your contest has been renamed 'snow' and someone was claiming to have written it 6 months ago - it has now been removed from 'all poetry':-) hugs Jan xx

Thanks for the placement Casarah, even with all those views I still only gathered 8 comments, lol. Oh well that's more than most. I have pulled many high view poems for publication and contest reasons so some of my largest are gone.

Oh Cas.....I came late to the party. I've been busy and didn't have time. There is so much going on in my life right now with hubby graduating and daughter about to take off to Europe. So sorry I missed it. No way you can make an exception??? ;) Maybe next time. Wonderful idea for a contest. Hugs

Yeah, that's a good point, Casarah. It really doesn't matter now though, cuz the contest is already established but the whole concept was a great idea. Thanks!

The only downside I see to the number of comments collected would be unfair if a poet had decided to turn off their comments, or have had users blocked, so they might have a great poem but it is just not spoken on...and I think with the views it only registers one view per isp address anyhow..i think...

Great thought, Nette. That actually would make more sense as far as accuracy goes because the commenter's obviously viewed the write and this would separate accidental/constructive/unrelated views from those that were prompted by legitimate interest in the poem itself.

Nette, I think generally the poems with most hits are also poems with most comments. So maybe if there were a contest on poem with most comments, it would have to be the same poem again??

Good question Nette,,,, Hi Casarah, I think it's a great idea. I pulled off both themes a year or two years ago... "poem with the most comment and viewers." They were a hit. However, hard to judge... What I enjoyed about that contest was having to chose poems that others found worthy of so many comments or views. LOL.. So yes, I AM IN. Finally, I get to join a contest, with a subject I used, but could not join. --About views, sometimes I will click on the poets most viewed poem and comment his/her poem. I never go by titles. But, I should. :)

that was going to be another contest...lol are you seeing the future!

You guys are probably getting direct 'hits' from external web searches because the titles of your poems are also similar to or partial names of movies, merchants, games, etc. Even if they aren't identical, search engines like Google will flag pertinent words in your titles and either bring the result (your poem) closer to the top of any given search list, or offer it as an option in the dropdown menu web users see when they have autocomplete turned on in their search settings. Um... this completes my analysis.

It's like a beauty pageant - you have to win the 'Miss Whatever State' title before you can go on to the Miss America and one day Miss Universe. Are ya feelin' me, Dre?

Once the data gets out to the internet though, it's probably only seen by the search engines as general Poetry Soup content, as opposed to being recognized as YOUR specific activity. To the internet, the data pulled from this site could be anything, even a random nonmember comment on the PS Facebook page but because you have such a high level of activity, your various input tends to be included in any data list that comes from this site.

Lycia Harding

Just a thought on your thought, though...It would be impossible to include everyone who's ever been online in every internet search anyone ever does so there's got to be a way to prioritize. Like I said, with the SEO thing in general, exposure creates exposure and I suspect the same applies within any individual website, as well. You are one of the top performers on the Soup and have much more actual content than most anyone else on here so your input probably comes up at the top of any internal search, which would then qualify it for inclusion in any relevant external search.

Yeah, it would, huh? I don't think we can see other peoples view stats though, can we? Maybe you Premium members can cuz I think you guys have some functions we Freebies don't get....

The Button poem, though, was the NAME of the contest so almost everyone was calling their poem, the Button poem (I think). It would be cool to see how many button poems got a whopping number of hits!
Harding Avatar

This means that instead of being on page 500 of a Google search, your content (wich, in this case is the poetry we post on the Soup) will be right up there at the top of page one. Generally, users are going to click on your link before they ever even realize there IS a next page. You see, Ladies? Are you pickin' up what I'm layin' down here?
Harding Avatar
Lycia Harding

Basically, exposure generates exposure, so if, like Poetry Soup, your company is actively engaging on facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc, the major search engines are going to 'notice' it sooner and because their primary goal is to provide users with the most relevant/popular/recent search results, if someone types in a similar name or one of the keywords (tags) you've registered, your company is going to come up much higher in the results list than it would if it was just lying dormant on it's own tiny little website somewhere.

Yes. Just to drop some technology on you: The company that hosts the Poetry Soup website (Arczis Consulting, Design & Development) provides services to a lot of internet based clients and one of their specialties is something called 'search engine optimization' (SEO) which is an algorythm based technology designed to gain online businesses exposure by using social networking, keyword registration, meta tags and so on, to improve that company's search engine rankings.

oh ,m aybe you mean that our poems come up in google searches and people are clicking on our poems thinking they are that other title of what they are searching for? Hmmm, now that makes sense, but why would a poem come up at the top of a list of something as general as the button?
Dietrich Avatar
Andrea Dietrich
Date: 8/29/2015 4:22:00 PM
oh my gosh, they aren't going by actual views?? Lycia, I think to count views, the people will have clicked on your poem. I noticed that all my poems with the most comments are also the ones with most views. (except that button poem). Why would Poetrysoup be allowing hits on views that are not on our actual poems?

Just as an example; Casarah, "Little Wishes" is the name of a children's clothing store and Andrea, "The Button" is not only the name of a mainstream movie, it's also the cryptic title of an online experiment hosted by a popular social news site recently.

Date: 8/29/2015 12:31:00 PM
Casarah, I just went to see your Little Wishes and found it very sweet. Left my comment there. I am so silly, it had never occurred to me that I could click twice and see my poems listed from most viewed down to least viewed. I had always just used Members' faves as my way of knowing my most popular poems. In fact, everything matched up to what I expected, but then I found a really WEIRD thing. My poem called The Button POem had over five thousand views on it. WHAT???? It's like number four on my most viewed list. That is REALLY ODD!

I knew about Forms and dates, but I guess I never really put much stock in "views." To me they are not nearly as important as comments. Also I heard of people who clicked on their own poems over and over again just to get themselves on a "most viewed" list. That is so silly. Yes, this site sure does love their lists!!

:-) Yeah you can go by Dates, Featured, Views, Title and Forms. I particularly like the form separation. Buttons buttons here and there...button buttons everywhere...this website sure does like list and links lol...

Thanks , Lycia. I think it is closer to 3, not five. hahaha. Is there a place that counts our NUMBER of poems we have? OH MY, Casarah, you gotta check out member favorites. That is the best way to know what the members LIKE!! I am really glad you drew my attention to the VIEW button. Now I am going to check out all my friends' MOST VIEWED POEMS. hahahaha. What fun!!!

None of my poems have gone to other sites... when I just googled it. This is my highest with 1846 views. But my favorite is Dragon and Dr. Seuss. My newest are usually my favorites... At least for a while.

I better double check that I have highest views on my poem as well as highest comments. I did not think about that! yes, it is wonderful the publicity that we are getting through the sister sites as well. One other poem of mine got made into a short film thanks to the exposure!!

I really can't wait to see what everyone comes up with this next one, let someone said too the highest views doesn't always mean the highest comments, very interesting to see the whole picture of things..This site really is getting us out there!
Date: 8/29/2015 11:26:00 AM
Casarah, I am so happy that you liked my SnaffyLaffy!! Thanks! In all my time here at Soup, I have never entered Cinder Girl in a member's contest because it has gotten so much publicity ever since I won the International Soup contest with it my first year here. I went ahead and put it in your current contest since it truly is my highest viewed poem. I got very lucky by using it in my first year here when Soup used to do a BIG contest for everyone here. If it were not for PoetrySoup having made it so accessible to the general population, I doubt it would have garnered so many views; however, one complete stranger that read my chapbook, told me it was her favorite poem in my whole book! hmmm

Casarah, first I want to say thanks for my great placement in your Dr. Seuss contest, that must have been fun to see after judging who wrote what, there sure were some great poems entered. And my most viewed poem oddly does not have the most comments, but it was and is very meaningful to me so thanks for the opportunity to let it be seen perhaps if chosen, once more. Love your themes and contests.

I googled my name and poems found an American blogger had picked up on my work and also an actress called Jen Lilley and mentioned it on their pages - the reads I have had on one poem have been phenomenal and the figure rises daily - the power of the internet. My favourite poemes change - not simly based on reads or comments simply because I am proud of what I wrote:-) hugs jan xx
