Mission statement: I don’t use AI to generate or even tweak my poetry, because I am a better poet than it.

Poetry has been my passion since my retirement from an accountancy based career a dozen years ago. I currently live in South Africa and this rainbow nation has inspired many of my poems. I also have British nationality and embrace their grammar and spelling, but I read widely and am not fazed by strict grammar rules: A pavement/sidewalk; glasses/eyeglasses; judgement/judgment, et cetera; they are one and the same to me when I read poetry. To date, I have self-published a number of books, including the poetry anthology by international poets, © Time, 2014 ISBN 978-0-620-60578-6, and have been cited in many international publications, both poetry journals, as well as in scholarly handbooks. Some of my short stories have been published in international electronic publications, and one of my novellas had been short-listed for an Afrikaans SA publication.

I serve on the Board of Advisers, of Taleemi Baithak.

I have a number of poetic forms to my credit, notably, Suzette Prime (listed here on PoetrySoup), as well as Suzette sonnet.

My most recent books which include examples of my poetry as well as notes regarding poetry - available directly from me:

  1. © The Eutony of Words, 2018 ISBN 978-0-6399382-0-2
  2. © Docendo discimus, 2021 (Revised 2023) ISBN 978-0-620-95432-7
  3. © Flight of Thoughts, 2023 ISBN 978-0-6397-8880-7
  4. © Downtown - Poetic Devices, 2023 ISBN 978-0-7961-1968-1
  5.  © Rocking Poetry, 2033 ISBN 978-0-7961-2824-9
  6. NEW: moonwake - Suzette Prime poetry, ISBN 978-1-0370-1836-7(PDF). It is a collection of 61 Suzette Prime poetry spanning from 2012 (when I designed the poetic form), up till now.

Alexandrine, hexaverse and hexameter

Blog Posted:10/10/2023 3:48:00 AM

Alexandrine is a name used for several types of verse line with related metrical structures. Most of which are ultimately derived from the classical French alexandrine.

The line’s name derives from the use in Medieval French Roman d’Alexandre of 1170, although it had already been used several decades earlier in Le Pèlerinage de Charlemagne. The foundation of most alexandrines consists of two hemistichs (half lines) of six syllables each, separated by a caesura (a metrical pause or word break, which may or may not be realised as a stronger syntactic break).

However, no tradition remains this simple. Each applies additional constraints (such as obligatory stress or non-stress on certain syllables) and option (such as a permitted or required additional syllable at the end of one or both hemistichs). Thus a line that is metrical in one tradition may be un-metrical in another.

In English the hemistich is replaced by hexaverse, meaning half lines of 6 syllables each. Thus ending with the traditional 12 syllables per verse. (Verse means both a single line, or a stanza in poetry.)

The number of metrical feet in a line is described as follows:

· Dimeter—two feet

· Trimeter—three feet

· Tetrameter—four feet

· Pentameter—five feet

· Hexameter—six feet

· Heptameter—seven feet

· Octameter—eight feet

In practice, the alexandrine can be found in the design of many poetic forms, for example, the Suzette sonnet:

· The couplets are iambic hexameter [*/|*/|*/—*/|*/|*/], and include an internal rhyme scheme. Mid-line punctuation is optional—replaced by conjunction.

For the contest, Eidolon

You may include iambic or trochaic hexameter if you wish, but it is NOT MANDATORY. The French alexandrine usually (not always) includes meter, but it is different to the English meter that usually embraces the iambic and occasionally the trochaic.

In my alexandrine couplet I employed iambic hexameter:

Thalassophile (poetrysoup.com)

HEXA means 6. Therefore, for the single perfect rhyme: iambic hexameter is */|*/|*/|*/|*/|*/; and for the syllabic rhyme: trochaic hexameter is /*|/*|/*|/*|/*|/*. Remember that for the contest only use polysyllabic words for the rhyme schemes, rhyming the 6th and 12th syllables in each line per the prescribed formula – see the contest page for the full details.

I hope that this blog has clarified some confusion in the minds of some poets as to what is meant by hexameter in the description of the alexandrine here at Poetry Soup and elsewhere.

The quickest way to succeed is to start now and figure it out as you go. You can't learn to drive in a parked car.

Happy quills!

Suzette

"Alexander Pope denounced (and parodied) the excessive and unskillful use of this practice: Then at the last and only couplet fraught With some unmeaning thing they call a thought, A needless Alexandrine ends the song, That, like a wounded snake, drags its slow length along." I agree with him. I love meter but despise syllable counting, especially when unrelated for a strict purpose, because they trip over each other's feet in transition.

There seemed to have been some confusion regarding hexaverse and hexameter. Now I will give it over to the poets to read the contest information with attention. I don't like to interfere, even if it is my contest :)
