RECAP
'[A] quatrain in imagistic monosyllabic words …':
The 6 types of imagery: auditory, gustatory, kinetic, olfactory, tactile & visual. In poetry, imagery is a vivid and vibrant form of description that appeals to the readers’ senses.
It creates a mood rather than tell a story. The first couple of lines usually include a reference to nature, but it may deviate from this. However, for the contest, the reference to nature introduces the theme. An analogy is saying something is like something else to make some sort of an explanatory point. You can use metaphor and simile when creating an analogy.
‘In fragmented phrases …’. NO ENJAMBMENT, as per my example jueju poetry on the contest page as well as on my poetry page. Also see my poem, Old tunes – wujue, depicted here. The first word caps are the prerogative of the poet.
'Rhyme scheme: abcb (classic jueju) OR aaba (mimicking the Rubáiyát).' This refers to the standard END LINE notation of rhyme schemes. No internal rhymes used.
COMPOSITION
Per my example depicted here (the DOWN columns). The word units can be clearly discerned: The matching first two lines and the contrast in the 3rd line (after the em dash).
1. Old, aged—fresh
2. Tunes, songs—beat
3. Loud, shrill—soft
4. Voice, notes—lights
5. Soars, leapt—wink
FOURTH LINE: Breaks away from the matching and contrasting words in the preceding three lines and brings it all together to a climax, with reference to the first line (an analogy or linked by theme).
'Only nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are used (stressed syllables).'
PRESENTATION
'Each line of the phrases (each in monosyllabic groups) is presented on the written page with a forward slash between them and a space before and after each forward slash. ... The two-word title must include the word ‘wujue’ after this phrase.'
Please refer to the contest page for the full description and requirements for this contest. I will hold off for another week reading and evaluating the entries received thus far. You, therefore, have time to do revision of your wujue and do not have to cancel and resubmit your altered poem at this point in time. Due to personal reasons I have brought the closing date forward to 6 June 2023.
