The winter solstice time is no longer celebrated as it once was, with the understanding that this is a period of descent and rest, of going within our homes, within ourselves and taking in all that we have been through, all that has passed in this full year which is coming to a close... like nature and the animal kingdom around us, this time of hibernation is so necessary for our tired limbs, our burdened minds. Our modern culture teaches consumption to the max at this time; alcohol, lights, shopping, overworking, over spending, comfort food, and consumerism. And yet the natural tug to go inwards as nearly all creatures are doing is strong and the weather so bitter that people are left feeling that winter is hard, because for those of us without burning fires and big festive families, it can be lonely and isolating. In actual fact, winter is kind. She points us in her quiet soft way towards our inner self, towards this annual time of peace and reflection, embracing the darkness and forgiving, accepting and lovingly embracing ‘goodbye’ to the past year. Winter takes away the distractions, the buzz, and presents us with the perfect time to rest and withdraw into a womb like love, bringing fire and light to our hearts and hearth. Then, just around the corner the new year will begin again, and like a seed planted deep in the earth, we will all rise with renewed energy once again to dance in the sunlight.
a blanket of white covers a gray, brown landscape of hibernation dormant beneath snow nature nurtures vibrant growth waiting for springtime

Hi Sara, you talk of winter from a positive aspect which many people appear to neglect. Life is how we live it, making the most of all seasons, concentrating on the good rather than the bad. ~ All the best for the coming festive season. // paul

thank you for your visit, Paul, and for your insight. Up until recently, I didn't always see winter's beauty. After surgery a year ago, I now see the beauty in all seasons and the positivity in the world. Thanks for your kind words...have a lovely holiday season, Sara

I read with interest your wise observations. Instead of complaining about the loneliness and isolation, winter imposes on us, let us see it as time to hibernate and withdraw into our inner self. It is a time to recharge our batteries. "Then, just around the corner the new year will begin again, and like a seed planted deep in the earth, we will all rise with renewed energy once again to dance in the sunlight.". Loved reading this.

Dear Sara, this fantastic piece of work has truly astounded me. It not only exhibits extraordinary brilliance, but it also deeply resonates with truth. Winter has the power to create its own enchantment, symphony, and meaning. It is without a doubt a blessing, as is your writing here. It's a nice reminder of the seasons' cyclical nature, orchestrated by a wise writer. These

dearest Sotto--I'm humbled knowing my poem astounded you. Thank you for your gracious words and for acknowledging the truth behind my words. I agree, winter has its own unique beauty and music. In years passed, I made myself miserable in winter then thought, "What's the point in that?" I intentionally find the enchantment in the changing winter scenes, discovering something new & life lessons in winter. Thanks for saying I'm a wise writer! I'm blushing, really. Have a great week

I just love this... it is so true. Even though I don't like winter, it too shares its magic, its music, its meaning. A blessing for sure, as is your writing here. Love to you and prayers, too. Love, Gina

You are right. Nature takes a break and comes back stronger. We stress ourselves out, and drop dead.
