Unimaginable

I utterly refuse to imagine
A world in which poetry is absent,
It would be almost as great a sin
To say that the world lacks sentiment.

I doubt if I could ever be content
To follow any other discipline,
To me the loss would be a punishment
I utterly refuse to imagine.

If great love stories have been genuine,
Poetry must have been their complement,
Surely true love could not survive within
A world in which poetry is absent.

The death rattle of verse would represent
The sound of the scraping of nails on tin,
As well declare all music's banishment:
It would be almost as great a sin.

I think it is quite useless to begin
Any contemplation of the extent
Of misery one must determine
To say that the world lacks sentiment.

Fellow poets, there is no argument,
No possible scenario wherein
We could expect to circumvent
A tragedy of such grim origin
I utterly refuse.
