The Poet Reclining
Inspired by the painting The Poet Reclining, by Marc Chagall 1915
Viewing the painting will support making sense of the images in the poem. The painting was done during the painters honeymoon as the First World War began. This is just my interpretation.
Outstretched
From artist, to poet
Recline
Take a breath
With faded pallor and quiet contemplation
Knowing, to turn, is all that is required
Face the World
From this unreal place
Of fir trees and animals grazing
The war to end war
Out of sight
What do I see, feel, imagine
Are these my efforts
Do they contribute
I lay my head in comfort
But my mind bears the weight
Of the unseen World
Never held at bay
But it's not here
I cradle myself and my dreams
Until morning
