The Dream of a Lonely Orphan

She sat alone
behind closed window,
secured by iron grids,
on the top floor
of an ugly old black building
that some dared call
an orphanage.
Once she had hope,
Once she had dreams
that some kindly couple
might perceive,
wish her for themselves,
take her to a cozy house,
where food was savoury to taste.
She dreamt she would
achieve normality,
attend a proper school,
read books and play
with happy children,
receive toys occasionally,
and live in harmony.
The dream remained a dream.
days turned forlorn.
All hope was lost.
She was too old now.
Couples wanted small children,
Unsuitable ones came for her
but were refused.
Little did she know
that soon she would
develop another dream,
that someone would finally notice her,
and carry her off
on a romantic spree.
From the closed barred window
She looked at the moon.
Will she find happiness?

Hi Victor, Good perspective on someone that was left abandoned. Many blame parents for abandoning their child, but what if the parent thought they was giving their child a better life? However, like you skilfully wrote, that's not always the case. Poor girl, went from a child to young women and she's left all alone! Good storytelling. Well done:-) Alexis

Of course she will. But she has to help herself. Mere dreaming won't do. I enjoyed your theme and your free verse.

I've often pondered on's heart-wrenching to see the face of unlucky children who are not makes me angry on parents who abandon children while they are alive.. it's so unjust. Your writing brings all the confliction emotions to surface. Hope there is a remedy to it. May be severe punishment to those who abandon kids. Thanks for sharing. :) Sunita.

Oh, I hope she does find happiness, Victor. Those older children have often waited many disappointing years for adoption. I would gladly welcome one into my home. She is still young, still needs love. Maybe the right man will come along and show her the love she deserves. Beautifully penned, Victor. Hugs, carolyn

Victor, this feels so real, I have a feeling you either are empathetic beyond the beyond or you have met someone in this or a similar circumstance. I often think of the orphans, and I know many who live with parents, but are still orphans. It is terribly sad.
