After three months, the Texas drought finally ended. Blessed rain clouds came. Dark clouds rumbled through our neighborhood. Thunder boomed and lightning crackled. Then fat drops of summer rain fell onto the hot, dry ground creating a pleasant and rather distinctive odor that stirred childhood memories of my mother standing on the front porch describing how she could always “smell rain” right before a storm. During a rain event, an “earthy” smell permeates the air. Folks call it musky, fresh—generally pleasant. Until recently, I didn’t know that rain itself actually has no scent. What?! Come to find out that pleasant smell is called “petrichor,” a term coined by two Australian scientists in 1964. Petrichor comes from the moistening of the ground and is a combination of fragrant chemical compounds. Some are from oils made by plants. Some are actinobacteria that decompose dead or decaying organic matter into simple chemical compounds which can then become nutrients for developing plants and other organisms. Who knew? Too much information for me. All I know is I love that ‘fresh’ rain smell.
first comes the rumbling rain falls with rhythmic tapping release heady scent even while I sleep even locked in the attic I can smell the rain

Completely fascinated by your explanation of petrichor and I love love the smell. Wouldn't it be incredible if we could (one day) 'Google Sniff' our way around the world.. Texas will be top of my list for after the rain. Lovely write Sara x

thanks for stopping by, Sam, and for commenting. I agree, it would be incredible if we could bottle the 'rain smell' or if Google had a sniff search. I like the idea...maybe one day. Texas rain is great...you'd love it. Enjoy your day, Sara

So beautifully written and so full of information! I didn't know the scientific explanation of 'petrichor'! However, this scent of the earth is so beautiful that intoxicates me when it rains after a dry spell. Your haikus at the end are also beautiful, Sara.

Now this is an excellent haibun your prose is written so well and has so much imagery... I see so many poetic techniques in this like alliteration and assonance and even in prose these make it so much better... great ending also.. a sign of your talent as a poet..

Thanks, Anne-Lise, for stopping by and for appreciating our need for rain. I've heard that Norway is mild in the summer, but all that rain would grow wearisome. I didn't know you were from Norway. Glad to have a poet friend abroad. I appreciate you.

- I understand very well that you long for rain and autumn, Sara ... we never have summers like this in Norway ... this summer was miserable with cold wind and a lot of rain ... September, which is the first autumn month, has been much better ... ( it's our last hope before winter comes:) - Enjoy your rain...it smells wonderful :) - A lovely poem :) - hugs
