SILENCE OF LOST SOULS

SILENCE OF LOST SOULS

The train was slowly gliding down the railway track. The treeless strip on both sides of the railway marked the border which I crossed for the first time. The tree line of the forest cast a shadow on the open field as the sun was setting on the western horizon. The silence inside the carriage and the slow, quiet motion of the train, made the scene nothing short of eerie. It was as if time stood still. To my mind it brought a vision of ghosts from yesteryear, when battle raged between the neighboring countries some seven decades ago.

	in fading sunset
	aspens swaying in the breeze
	eerie is the night

That open field marked the border to where it was moved after world war II had ended. In my mind I heard the echoes of war: the silence of anxious waiting, the deafening noise of heavy artillery, the rattling of machinegun fire, the cries of pain of the injured. Although Karelia had been lost, the freedom of the nation was kept. I looked quietly at the stillness of the twilight and in my thoughts I gave thanks to all those brave men and women who had fought for freedom and independence for the country, its people, its children and the future.

	as dusk settles in
	darkness engulfs the forest
	silence of lost souls

TJ, I'm glad I went back in your archives to find this gem of a haibun. Deep thoughts of past warfare and soldiers dying painted with strokes of a quiet train through an eerily silent forest and field where battles were fought over borders and freedom. Very touching, my friend. ~ John

Excellent whether I am reading the first time or rereading, I don’t know. A fave. Yes, I feel we must and most of us feel the need to hold those in our thoughts through life’s tragedies. When I visited Germany those trains... yet I also thought about our own country’s sin of slavery. So throughout the world we see and remember our fellow man, hoping not to suffer but mindfully suffering with them. (A fave)

There was a t.v comedy program called Blackadder goes Forth set in the trenches of World War 1. The Final episode where they go over the top is the most touching tribute or piece I have ever had the privilege to see. If you ever get the chance or can look it up you definitely should. Your Poem reminded me of it. Cheers Teppo

Fantastic Poem Teppo. This is the type of poem that would fit in well on any school history ciriculum when being taught about World War 1&2. Not only do we need to learn about the facts but the consequences and depth of emotion it evokes . Bravery born out of total stupidity and futility

I can imagine how one could envision the battles that were wages in WWI and WWII over in Europe, other countries, and islands. So many men and women have lost their lives, lost their well being, suffered permanent injuries from wars until it is very sad to even think about it. Your work is a very good one expressing how it may have been and the appreciate for those who gave their lives in one way or another so that we could have freedom. Sara..Thanks for the visit ..

Thank you so much for your kind words, wishes, congrats and fave, Susan. Your kind support is always very much appreciated by me. The idea for this poem came to me when I crossed the border between Finland and Russia a few weeks ago, and thought of the many heroes of war that provided us with our freedom today. Lova and hugs. TJ, this is a very well written piece. The simple sentence structure and word choices recreate the rhythmic sounds of the train carrying you back into the horrors of war and its aftermath - a pain filled peace.

Thank you, Andrea. Yes, others are having problems too with comments to my latest poem, and I have problems with replying to the comments. Perhaps the pictures take too much bit space and slow it down. Who knows. T.J
