That's very sweet of you, Susan, and I'm so pleased you enjoyed this one - it came from a rather whimsical place in my imagination, a place that's somewhat hazy at times ... like memories of childhood. I'm not always sure how such pieces will come across. Blessings, my friend! :-) <3

Really nice Greg, I remember this one, a lot of stiff competition in sonnets, congrats on a fine placement!

Check most dictionaries and they will say an English sonnet has 10 syllables per line, Italian 11, and French 12. The form section here should be updated to explain syllable counts as being necessary to identify the form, I will suggest it, thanks for your patience!

I appreciate your diligence in wanting to do a sonnet right! If any of the top winners in my contest varied in syllable count that would be my error. As many syllable counters online vary, sometimes a poet will use one counter and the judge uses another which cause a discrepancy.

Here's what Poetry Soup says - "Lyric poems that are 14 lines that usually have one or more conventional rhyme schemes" ... I will study more in-depth online. Most that I'm reading on the winner's list have at least one line with less than ten syllables, so I assume that's a common (allowed) exception? I want to learn correctly from the git, before I set up any bad habits, lol. Thanks, Bro!

OK ... thanks. Thing is, the "Sonnet" section of the "Forms" list here at PS says absolutely NOTHING about strict or regular syllable count, and says only that a Sonnet is a fourteen line form with a set rhyme scheme. Maybe somebody should update it, because "new" folks like me who are learning forms take those things to heart. I certainly would have done so had I known. (All but a couple of my lines have seven syllables, the others eight - I think some classics add or subtract an extra?)

If you stick to a strict syllable count(eg 8,10,12 per line) it will feel like a true sonnet, I give 10 points for following form, just a hint to place better next time!

Thanks, John, much appreciated ... I'm glad you enjoyed it, (just my second Sonnet, but I'm going to write more soon) ... I know it's not the "typical" fare for the form, but that's my odd sense of the world, lol. ;-)

Thanks so much, John, although I have more N/A's in Brian's contests than I do placements, so I'm not so sure I know what he likes, lol. Hit-and-miss, I guess.

This is such an expressive write my good friend! You have captured the angel quite magnificently, and she floats upon the highest cloud with such a smile the brings rainbows, and allows one to seep into a quiet, tender sleep, to awaken with such a joyous splendor...that's what your poem brings to my mind, peace and tranquility!
