Opera
Opera has always seemed to me
a bizarre musical menagerie.
Strange characters roam the stage
spuming mostly revenge and rage.
The plots are thick and laughable,
if not perversely diabolical! –
murder, incest, rape, adultery,
assassination and conspiracy –
the bread and butter of centuries
and abnormal human activities.
Settings, costumes, pageantry
if nothing else, are worth a see –
and always kinder on the eyes
than ear-shattering vocal highs!
Add the tedious dramatization
while with eager anticipation,
along with my aching posteria,
I wait for that one redeeming aria.
