Jacqueline (Jackie) Trestrail: 1932 ~ 1978

She was of this rich earth and clay
a darling lass so full of life and so wont at play
who used to water ski in Turtle Bay

At Carnival time costume in hand
marched and danced she in a masquerade band
till Las Lap and midnight's last stand

The year was nineteen fifty-three
when down the aisle walked in grace and beauty
my future mother and bride to be

A Catholic girl whose love was true
torn between the man she loved and faith she knew
but followed her heart and said "I do!"

Was a leap of faith and a call to fate
to stay all the madness and mayhem at our gate
or leave Trinidad before it's too late

Her island home for us all gave up
and of life's bittersweet wine drank from its cup
but a poisoned chalice she did sup

She was an abider of all that's good
and raised us in the joys and love of motherhood
in the devotions for which she stood

Whom taught me in the ways of love
and edified the outcast soul in me to rise above
when all our lives she was a part of

The breast that suckled life in arms
needed more than healing salves or curing balms
yet bravely you fought all its harms

Now it's been twoscore years gone
since God among His saints counted you as one
and a darkness this world fell upon.

Had to visit one of your poems, and am glad I did! What a lovely, heartfelt tribute to your beloved mother, Keith. I love how you describe her strong faith and devotion to her family. I’m sorry she left this world so soon, but she obviously left an indelible mark on your life! I also am blessed to have a wonderful mother, and am so grateful to God for her!

Not everyone has pleasant memories of their parents but I was very lucky with mine. My mother died far too early but is still very much present in my thoughts. Glad your mother is still around. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

This is a beautiful tribute to your mother, Keith. If it hadn't exceed the 20-line limit by 10 additional lines, it would have placed even higher. Congratulations on your win! There were many terrific entries, including yours. Thank you for participating in the contest. Best wishes, Carolyn

A beautiful tribute/ode to your Mother, Keith. Your last line, 'and a darkness fell this world upon' is a profound line because when we lose our beloved Mother there is a dark emptiness upon us cast. All the best to you. :) ~ Artsie

A truly exceptional tribute written by one that has suffered that immense loss. From the picture , I see you had a truly beautiful mother my friend. And that we both have written tribute poems about our mothers having passed on. A fav....

If I didn't know better, I 'd say I was your mother, Keith, but that doesn't make sense as I was one when she got married, so even though I do believe in reincarnation it would have been nigh onto impossible. I WISH I had met your mother and danced and played and sang with her though, like you did. I miss her too because of this wonderful poem. I love this for her, and it's GREAT!

This is such a beautiful tribute and one that touches many people here who have lost their mother too. I love how you wrote this, and I'm sure she is honored by this.

Truly a wondrous and heartfelt tribute to your mother my friend. So sad that you never really got to know her and spend far more time with her. Yet your poem and your fine poetic tribute tells that you knew and you so loved! Brought tears to my eyes , made me think again of my own mother my friend. A true gem and a fav....

Cheers Lewis. My mother was an only child and, believe it or not, because she was Catholic and my father Protestant, her parents refused to attend the wedding. It broke her heart.
