After five days of nonstop rain, I simply must go outside. I bundle up, slip my hands into my gloves, walking briskly toward the nearby woods. The November morning has a bite; it nibbles not-quite-gently at my cheeks and ears. Early November brings with it the last sun of the year shining low and coppery over the woods. I stride through heaps of rusty autumn leaves, aching to see beauty dying all around me. I’m alone along the silent, rambling trails save for the crows and house sparrows bobbing from hedge to hedge. I pause. An exquisite melancholy seemed to hang over the landscape. I glance around noticing that the trees are standing perfectly still, all sticks and bones. Without their leaves, how lovely they are, spreading their arms like beautiful dancers. The autumn breeze gently tousles their bare limbs. They sway to and fro, dancing graciously accepting they’re in their November days.
I am in the November of my days when life has swayed me to and fro a season when leaves of red and gold swirl ‘round ankles that had traveled miles love and loss, starts and finishes behold souls a-plenty, those who’ve come and gone

Sara, this is as exquisite as a scarlet maple leaf. Every line overflows with stunning, original expressions that pull together in your final stanza! It is really breathtaking in its autumnal beauty. I , too, like to walk especially after a November rainstorm. If this is for a contest, dear friend, best wishes for a win! Sending you blessings on the crisp, refreshing winds of November.

You really have a way with words dear beautiful sara, i am In awe of the imagery painted throughout and how you’ve compared november to your age or where you feel like you are in life right now, its interesting always how a poet conveys so much through their work, i remember shakespeare used to use seasons too to depict age etc. i felt the depth of this peace and i see acceptance as i read this, “ souls a-plenty, those who’ve come and gone ” this line hits strong for me, a fave for me definitely

dearest Ink--thank you for your complimentary words and for deeply appreciating the imagery and how it conveys my feelings right now...must be the season :-) Yes, Shakespeare did use seasons...I'd forgotten about that technique of his. I'm grateful you also sensed the acceptance in the reflective words. You're so insightful and sensitive. Thanks for the fav. Enjoy your day, Sara

I read this earlier and wanted to return again to comment. I love the imagery used here - particularly the trees all sticks and bones. Well written and very atmospheric and perfect as a comparative scene of life's journey

Dear Sara, the feelings of love and loss, as well as the beginnings and endings that are characteristic of the autumn of one's life, are ones that I find myself identifying with. Your evocative metaphors have me mesmerized, and the soft glow of the sun pours a coppery tint across the woodland, lighting up its skeletal branches in a slightly tumultuous fashion as it illuminates them.

thanks, kind Sotto, for your visit and for identifying with the 'autumn of one's life.' I'm grateful, too, that the metaphors spoke to and captivated you. I appreciate those words. Don't know why, must be the season. I've been reflective of late as I think about the 'autumn of my life.' Glad to be sharing that via poetry. Have a great day, your poetess friend, Sara

Very nicely said about the autumn of life. It is not an easy stage, but all humans need that stage of life to develop their character. Thanks for sharing this one with us and for dropping by my page. Sara K
