Mysterious Child

Entirely made of us, yet somehow not
a part of us, how can you even be?
Why can’t we feel your thoughts and dreams, and what
are you if you are neither him nor me?
Though severed from you, somehow we feel tied
to you, as if they’d never cut the cord,
We started you, you grew and kicked inside
my body, and besotted, we have poured
all hope into those perfect, tiny hands,
For reasons only love can ever say...
Yet loving you won’t help us understand
your world; you are a universe away.
You’re so much more than we can know or see...
You’re perfect sense, yet total mystery.

Thank you jan! I actually wrote this one about George... who is, we think, NT, but still a complete mystery! I did write another sonnet about Thomas and HIS own brand of mysteries a while back x

Beautiful, Nina. Such a heartfelt write. Perfect for any child, but I pictured an autistic child... Congrats on your well deserved win with this gem.

Thank you Line. I was actually gazing at my 4 year old while writing most of this! He does have tiny, perfect hands... and an awesome temper! :-)

Oh, Nina, my favorite subject - our begotten! How can we go wrong with such lovely and mysterious creatures to write about, buoyed with our limitless love and wonder in even their most trivial of capers? I LOVE this and must fav, and I must read to my youngest daughter, (also my best friend), as she will love it, I know, and will see it as I do, (she's turning 30 next week - oh my! I have 3 kids, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, and most people think I'm 40, lol - it goes too fast!).

Thank you so much Greg - I hope your daughter enjoyed it! Most people think I’m 40 too. Maybe that’s cos I’m a very slightly youthful 41 ;-) Can’t believe you’re a great-granddaddy though!

Gorgeous poem... The lines that really caught me most were: "For reasons only love can ever say.../ Yet loving you won’t help us understand/ your world; you are a universe away." So true, and beautifully penned.
