Mother of Life and Death

Mother Earth, with her cracks, hollows and holes She shelters the soldier in her breast, her folds He flings himself through sky and mud To win his life by feet and blood She hides his face from fear of death And stifles his terror, his cries for rest She shields him away from the rocket’s rip She redeems him or buries him and his bleeding lips
