As a young girl growing up in the 50s and 60s, Hollywood’s glamorous and glitzy lifestyle fascinated me. Popular actresses such as Jane Russell, Ava Gardner, and Rita Hayworth captivated me with their mink stoles, high-heeled shoes, Dior gowns, and overstated jewelry. But of all the women I saw both on-screen and off, my Aunt Betty was the most glamorous woman I knew. Whenever she strolled into a room, I couldn’t help but notice how her warm, chestnut-colored hair captured the light just right. And her long, gorgeous eyelashes trimmed the gentlest, kindest pair of coffee-brown eyes—eyes that always held a tiny warmth within them and sparkled with bliss whenever she smiled. Her lips—glistening with meticulously applied cherry red lipstick—were flawlessly sculpted while her face—slightly lighter than ivory—was rouged and florid just like Jane Russell’s. Aunt Betty frequently wore ostentatious earrings that clung to her earlobes and sparkled like tiny chandeliers made of Austrian crystals; so whenever she turned her head in any direction, the earrings twinkled like stars scattered across the night sky. Draped across her shoulders was her favorite mink stole—a dark, glossy fur that reminded me of the high-fashion pieces associated with Hollywood’s glamour and glitz. Yes, Aunt Betty was every bit as glamorous, graceful, and seductive as Ava Gardner; yet, beneath that fashionable mink stole and those glistening earrings was the most strikingly independent woman I knew. In fact, she was the only single woman I knew; and she was the only woman I knew who fashioned a career in a time when a woman’s only life choice was motherhood. She inspired me, for just being in her company made me feel as if I, too, could one day be both a glamorous yet independent woman.
each gesture, each word graceful as an autumn leaf floating to the ground she moves with such ease, wonder and beaut in each step style unwavering she’s a confluence of wisdom and awe, forging past life's barriers you're a reminder that beauty exists beyond unseen dance of soul

Hi Sara, what an eloquent and heartfelt tribute to your beloved Aunt Betty. Her photos help enhance your descriptive story, yet even without the photos I think I could still see her in my mind. Lovely story. Have a blessed autumnal Sunday. Hugs xxxx

As I read your poems, I wonder why you were keeping silent with all your talent till recently even when Bill has been so active on the site. Your haibuns are indeed a joy to read. You have drawn a life like portrait of your Aunt Betty and she stands before us in her matchless grace and beauty."Aunt Betty frequently wore ostentatious earrings that clung to her earlobes and sparkled like tiny chandeliers made of Austrian crystals; so whenever she turned her head in any direction, the earrings twinkled like stars scattered across the night sky." Just beautiful!

thanks for stopping by, Valsa. In answer to your question, I never envisioned myself as a poet. I've written memoir vignettes for years along with a novel. Bill kept encouraging me so I put my toes in the water; here I am :-) Thanks for asking and for your kind words about my poem...your appreciation means so much to me. Have a great day, Sara

Dear, Sara, Your aunt would be so touched by your beautiful homage to her; you did her attire and beauty justice. So frequently, we desire other people would see or appreciate a quality in us that we ourselves should pay more attention to recognizing.

She is the real thing, her perfection, showing impeccable taste. I love all the actresses you noted weren't they just gorgeous! I grew up around Hollywood and caught the same bug. Aunt Betty has those deep-set eyes that speak, just precious. A treasure Haibun/Haiku's I like "you're a reminder that beauty exists beyond unseen dance of soul" xox

I think this is just a brilliant tribute to a beloved relative who sounds absolutely fascinating in her uniqueness. Great photos too. I love your phrase "unseen dance of soul". We so often have qualities we wish others could see or acknowledge, or perhaps we too should perceive more closely. Your poem manages to do both eloquently :)) Also +fav

She looks so beautiful in those pictures, i think she loved dressing well and she had a unique style! How beautifully you’ve described her. Your love for your family is evident here in this haibun as always, and i cant help but be in awe as i kept reading, especially the lines where you described her earrings compared them to chandeliers with austrain crystals and also stars and how detailed you were with how you described her lipstick color too. Its good to read about how it was for you i

The female celebrities of the 50s and 60s were stunning...graceful in appearance both on and off screen. You would've been awestruck! I'm glad you liked the Haikus at the end...and I'm most appreciative for the fave & your enthusiasm for my work. Enjoy your day, Sara
