Life's Bounty
What of life’s bounty will long life ensure?
What value is purpose as life we endure?
Is it beauty, or talent, or money we need?
Is it fame or glory, or some secret creed?
From dawns early light ‘til twilight’s sunset,
Which way shall I travel, which is my best bet?
Am I what I eat as someone once said?
Or am I the thoughts coming out of my head?
We can’t take it with us, it must not be things.
Surely not houses, or cars, or jeweled rings,
It must be the intrinsic like memories and such,
The things that our hearts long for so much.
If a long life with purpose is what’s in the making,
We’ll find we’ll give out, much more than we’re taking.
