In the not quite morning
I was going to write about morning birds
But they've stopped
And I suddenly can't hear a thing
Other than the other occupant of this room
A distant chirp tries to draw my thoughts
My own breath
It's there
And the birds outside
I can hear them after all
And I won't cry, not now
I cover my eyes and breathe
Silent tears leak
Do they betray me or
Do I betray them not letting them fall?
I must stop holding my breath
I must listen to birdsong
I'll close my eyes again
Let them sing me back to sleep
